Things needed

1) Waiting in line "stuff" -- simple toys, electronics for the older ones, snackage.

2) When doing "warm weather" itineraries -- extra swimming suits (nothing worse than trying to get a 4YO back into a wet suit!)

3) If your otherwise pottytrained toddler will be made to endure a long evening/night plane flight or car ride, some pullups. Their sleeping patterns will be way off wack and this way you don't have to deal with "accidents"

I've never gotten into the shoe bag organizer, duct tape, or lanyards but other parents swear by them.

Totally seconding the portable DVD player! Godsend! I take a shoe holder, hang it in th closet and stuff things like disposable bibs, cutlery, wipes, nappies (diapers) all manner of stuff in.
