Yes you can. (Sprint and Cingular, for sure.)

you mean I can text while out to sea, instead of calling, are the rates the same as you text when home? I have sprint and this would be great to communicate with my daughter while I am away.:confused:

As long as you are within range of a tower, you can text just as you can make a call. If you are out of the tower range for a call - no texting.

cingular (AT&T) rates are the same if you have a package -except the incoming to person on ship is free towards package but the outgoing back home is .50 per text. If you dont have a package then they are regular charge depending on your plan .10 or .15 each for either way.
