I was woundering if i should purchase a new under water camera in Ft Lauberdale or wait to our first stop in St Thomas (because i heard that camera were cheap there) . Any recommdation for shop at either place?

Nothing is cheap in St. Thomas. Think about it. It's an island so everything is imported. You can't count on having a good selection on an island either.

You may also be thinking about an inexpensive underwater disposable camera

that you can buy in K-Mart for $6.00 but will cost $20-$25 on the ship.

 

If you never plan on using the camera again(except maybe on the next vacation) this is the way to go.

I disagree. IMO, disposable cameras produce disposable photos.

 

A housing from many of the Canon and Olympus digital cameras is an affordable way to go. It will protect your camera from more than just water. Sand on the beach, rain, and splashes from water rides all come to mind as places I'd want a protected camera.

 

You can get the Canon A540 for Around $160 and the housing for $156 at Amazon
