CruiserJoJo Posted August 5, 2007 #1 Share Posted August 5, 2007 Is there any snorkeling that is good in Nassau that is close to the shore? If so, can you please tell me how to get to it. Thanks
sns101 Posted August 7, 2007 #2 Share Posted August 7, 2007 I was told by several different people (and I think it's on the official Bahamas tourism site) that due to years of people touching and otherwise abusing the reefs off the public beaches and resort areas, there are no more reefs close in to shore. We did the Stuart Cove trip on Aug 3 and it was fantastic. The boat ride was about 15-20 minutes from the dock. We snorkeled a reef off of Golden Key (a bird sanctuary) and a reef near a private beach. Neither would have been accessable without a boat, not due to distance but because there were no public shorelines near them.

sns101 Posted August 8, 2007 #4 Share Posted August 8, 2007 sns when you did stuarts cove did you get to go to that beach you mentioned and lay on it? Nope, it was entirely private. In fact it was just off Lyford Cay, and near Peter Nygard's luxury home, which apparently you can rent for $35,000 per day. (Not a typo!) I'm sure an armed security guard would have "escorted" us off the premises very quickly!
jimw Posted August 10, 2007 #5 Share Posted August 10, 2007 His store does a nice dive with sharks. We had fun several years ago and would go again. I understand they now do snorkeling with sharks too. From the cruise ships, it takes a while to get there though. First, tote gear about a quarter mile to get picked up by his bus, then about a half hour ride to the south end of the island to the shop, etc. 2 dives is kinda all dayish...........
