Flintstone Posted May 16, 2004 #1 Share Posted May 16, 2004 Thanks to all for the great info re Glacier Bay, Hubbard Glacier, Tracy Arms...but I'm finding little written about Sawyer Glacier which is on some itineraries. Any info? 9/2000 Carnival Tropicale 12/2001 NCL Norway 9/2002 NCL Norway 10/2003 Disney Wonder 2005...Alaska
Host Caroline Posted May 16, 2004 #2 Share Posted May 16, 2004 The Sawyer Glaciers are at the end of Tracy Arm fjord.. there are two, the North and South glacier. Tracy Arm is very scenic, a lovely place to cruise although IMHO only better on a smaller boat than a huge cruise ship. zebra Posted May 16, 2004 #4 Share Posted May 16, 2004 Yes, we arrived back from our Alaskan cruise yesterday and went to Tracy Arm - Sawyer Glaciers. It is very, very beautiful but we were a little disappointed as you do not pull up alongside the glacier like in Glacier Bay. The glaciers are quite a ways away - one would need to be on a smaller boat to get up close and personal. CruiseIsGood Posted May 17, 2004 #5 Share Posted May 17, 2004 Don't feel too bad. Getting up close and personal with glaciers that size is very dangerous, and even the small ships keep their distance. The underwater ice from the glaciers extends far past what you can see, and calving is very dangerous too.
