I guess that would depend on how portable the instrument is. When I want to take mine to a remote viewing site it's a major undertaking. I would expect that if you have a small Schmidt-Cassegain with a table mount it wouldn't be a problem but a dob or a refractor of any size would be difficult, at best, to manage. Remember, you're on a ship. Any tracking system would be reneded pretty much useless by the motion. I can't imagine how difficult it would be to keep an object in the field of view with anything but the lowest mag, widest angle lens.

I was thinking the same thing, its hard enough to dial in an object on land. A moving ship would drive me bannanas.
Falcon164016 Posted August 29, 2007 #5 Share Posted August 29, 2007 Yeah, you're going to need a platform that's more stable than a ship.

I would leave the telescope at home. As mentioned in other responses to you question, you would have a hard time tracking anything with a telescope... However a set of binoculars would be ideal for stargazing, or checking out ports, other ships, etc. Have a good cruise and enjoy that balcony!!! ruskatab Posted August 29, 2007 #7 Share Posted August 29, 2007 We were on the Valor 2 weeks ago and saw the Perseids meteor shower. It was really an awesome thing to see from the middle of the Ocean. I would call Carnival before lugging a telescope with you, but it would be awesome to have it on the balcony to star gaze at night. datonamanmike Posted August 29, 2007 Author #8 Share Posted August 29, 2007 we are not real into the telescope thing ( dont realy know much about it ) but if my wife could just see something she would be tickled pink
Thirsty Cruiser Posted August 29, 2007 #9 Share Posted August 29, 2007 2 problems: Even on the dock, the ship is usually not stable enough to view anything except maybe the moon. You would not want to pack anything that sensitive in your checked luggage, so that means it will likely need to fit through the x-ray machine. Plus, you will have to carry it around with you until your cabin is ready. Kind of a neat idea. A spotting scope or binocs may be more realistic, though. *Mach* Posted August 29, 2007 #10 Share Posted August 29, 2007 we are not real into the telescope thing ( dont realy know much about it ) but if my wife could just see something she would be tickled pink As was suggested, bring a pair of binocs... The field of view is vastly wider than a telescope and you become the stabilizing platform. You'll be surprised at how many objects will be viewable with moderate power binoculars. nothomeonacruise Posted August 29, 2007 #11 Share Posted August 29, 2007 How about binoculars instead? They would be a lot easier to bring. I know they're not as powerful, but you wouldn't need a tripod, either.
