Where are the black sand beaches in hilo. We are going to try and pack a lot into our day at Hilo.I would love to see the black sand beach. How far is it from Hilo?

Punalu'u Beach Park is about 60 miles from Hilo; worth the trip, IMO.

Or you have a small black sand beach called Richardsons about 1 mile away from the pier. Then, you have a new Black Sand Beach in Puna (Kaimu Beach, I think).

Is Punalu'u Beach Park in the direction of VNP? Would it be considered on the way?

Punalu'u is past the HVNP...maybe another 1/2 hour drive. But well worth it. Lots of turtles that are swimming or lying on the beach there. Beautiful beach, shade under the palm trees.

We might try that after the Volcano. How do you get there from the Volcano.

When you come out of the National Park back on to the highway, take a left. It will be about 20 miles. Look for the signs, can't miss them.

Hi,

We were in Hilo this summer on POH. Before we went to Volcano National Park we drove to Panaluu Black Sand Beach Park. I wasn't very far from where we picked up our Thrifty rental car and the thrifty van driver suggested we go there first and then come back down to VNP. You should be able to google the beach. It is very pretty and the first black sand beach my husband had seen and there were about 6 turtles on or near the shore. we were glad to have seen it. Keep in mind, though, that if you want to do the crater rim drive, it takes a while, so try not to over-pack that day. Smile. Have a great time!
