Freeport ?

The cruise port is an industrial port and is pretty far out of town. There are basically no facilities there at the port. But Freeport on your own is quite easy. A shared taxi-van to Lucaya is the leading destination and costs just $5 per person each way even though it's a good 25-30 minute journey. At Lucaya you'll find the Port Lucaya Marketplace for shopping, eating and drinking and the Our Lucaya (Sheraton/Westin) Resort. The beaches behind the resort are pubic beaches and are beautiful. And the resort has facilities, shops, food & drink, etc. There is also a casino if you're interested.

Sorry, like the others have said, there really isn’t much that will keep you near the ship.

We did a snorkeling excursion and the water was great. The reef was beautiful and there were a lot of fish. We booked through the ship. They took us on a bus over as a group and gave us tickets to ride back when we wanted so we could hang around after.

i agree with all the other comments Freeport is an awesome and beautiful place! don't let anyone tell you any differently

people who call it a dump probably haven't let the port area which is in the industrial area of Freeport, but like it has been mentioned rather cheap transportation is available to take you into Freeport and Our Lucaya...or there is Paradise Cove i loved that place!

Like kingbobofthenorth said, the port is in an industrial area. There are some shops right at the dock, but they are few in number and you could visit them all in about a half hour to 45 minutes if that long. There is nothing else by the dock. Oh yeah, there was a phenominal limbo performer at the dock. His show was about 15 to 20 minutes long.

Last year my family did the Carnival picnic on the beach excursion. We absolutely loved it. There were organized games adults and children played...complete with prizes (my daughter and I won the egg toss and got a couple of bucket hats out of the deal). The meal consisted of hamburgers and hot dogs and a couple of native side items. When we went in March, the water was cold and rough so we layed in the sun, played games, and ate. What a great experience.

In a couple of weeks, we will take a cab to Port Lucaya Marketplace and do some walking and shopping. Maybe go to a beach just to walk around and enjoy the view.

Hope this helps.

This will be my first time in Freeport (Been to Nassau three times) and we want to go to Lucaya (I don't even know how to say it- hahah) Anyhoo- I was looking into the excursion ( one hour coastal boat ride to Lucaya, stay for about 90 minutes and then bus ride back to the ship). Do you all think for the first time it would be enjoyable to do the coastal tour or do you think it would be better if we (three women -ages, 41,18 and 18) just took a taxi there? I guess Im asking if there's alot to see there so would we want more than just 90 minutes at Lucaya?

Thanks in advance!

Laura

Do you remember which snorkeling excursion you did? YOu mentioned that they gave you tickets to ride back so you could hang around after...would that be hanging around at the snorkeling location or in the marketplace?

Thanks!

Take whatever cheap transportation is being offered by the ship that takes you to Port Lucaya. There's a very nice shopping area, hotels, a casino and the beaches. Depending on how much time you have, Port Lucaya is where the Dolphin Encounter is (at Unexso), where you can get snorkeling tours, parasailing whatever. The Grand Bahama Vacation website also has lots of info. http://www.geographia.com/grandbahama/

Do go to Lucaya better than down town Freeport. I have been going to the island for 15 years or so now. Love Lucaya. Beaches are public. Nothing to do at the pier (even the restaurant was torn down by a hurricane a few years ago.) Try to go to Unexso. Great Dolphin swims and scuba. There is a Westin accross the street from the Lucaya market place. You can book spa treatments there. Good restaurants at Lucaya try the pub or La Dolce Vita. Enjoy. I am green with envy.
