You can buy something in dollars once you get off the ship (lots of places right there) and get change in pesos. I didnt know there was a local bus there.....it is so easy to walk to everything in Cabo, we never have used it....where are you going?

If you were going to Mexico for a week, for the best exchange rate, I would go to a Mexican bank and exchange. They require you have a passport though. For only the little time you will be in the ports on a cruise, I don't think the exchange is worth the hassle. JMHO.

A few weeks ago we were on the Daw Princess. When we were in Puerto Vallarta. we shopped at the Liverpool department store across from the pier. We purchased a statue in pesos it was $1,159 and with the exchange rate we paid $105. For large purchases ask what the exchange rate would be, for small purchases pay in dollar. In resturants and most shops will give you the exchange rate, if you ask.:)

Most of the restaurants and small businesses in Cabo are using a 10 Peso / USD exchange rate on their menus and price schedules. Therefore, if the bill is 300 Pesos you will be charged $30.00 USD if paying in dollars. Several years ago, when the rates were favorable, this was the best way to pay.

But as of 11/14/07, the exchange rate is 100 Pesos = $9.15 USD. So if you pay that same bill in Pesos, it will only cost you $27.45 USD. If you are planning on making a large purchase (or paying a large bar bill), make sure what rate they will be charging you. Otherwise convert over to pesos to save a little money.

BTW, there are a few money exchange kiosks along the main street in Cabo. But double check the rates before exchanging. Also, they will sometimes give you a better rate if you exchange $200.00 USD or more. Unfortunately, the local banks aren't located very near the marina.

Just off the Dawn. Unfortunately the best exchange rates offered were in PV which is the last port. The American dollar was 10.40 pesos to the $1 in PV last week and the cdn was 11.40 to the $1.

You should be able to order pesos from your local American bank. I know we can in Canada (and did and saved about $50 by not using USD) so you should be able to also.

Most merchants will take dollars on a 10 to 1 basis. Reputable jewerly stores will give you the official exchange rate which is closer to 11 to 1. ATMs are all over and they have the best exchange rates. I believe there is a bank right by the tender port in the harbor.

There is an American Express money exchange center at the Tesoro Resort which is the furst HUGE resort that you will come to as you are walking to town via the marina- you cannot miss it, there is a lighthouse in front of the resort and Solomon's Landing Restaurant (excellent by the way) sits right in front of it. They will exchange or cash travelers checks.

However there is absolutly no need to use pesos in any of the Mexican Riveria ports. Almost all of the stores will give you the true exchange rate if they ring up your purchase on a register- it automatically does this. If you are buying a drink or purchasing something at a market or small stand, then they usually use the 10-1 rate just because it is easier. We never convert to pesos, even when we are there for 10 days or more!:)

cabo is so small you can walk anywhere unless you want to catch a taxi to 1 of the nicer resorts outside the downtown to see; its so not worth it to exchange for 1 day..any store has calculator and use true converson, you wont be ripped off, its been about $10 or 11 US$ to the peso for yrs now

Is there a place near the tender terminal in Cabo San Lucas to buy peso's. Thought we would use them for the local bus.

Gary

The simple answer to your question is that the local buses and collectivos take US$ at 10/1 rate. If you pay a dollar, then you will get 4 pesos back...it costs 6 pesos to ride any of the routes within the city.
