when do you reserve your child in the kids club?

Is this something done in advance or once you get on the ship?

Nothing to be done beforehand. Once on board find the children's club and sign up. Some cruise lines have an orientation get-together you can attend...it's usually the first or second day of the cruise.

The ship's kid area will have a list of all the kids and their ages. There should be info in your cabin about the registration/orientation, but also check the ship newsletter for the first day (one should be in your cabin). If neither is there when you get there, ask your cabin steward.

I haven't been on RC, but on Princess, there's a kid's program listing when to go to register and the list of day-by-day activities when you first get to your cabin. The activities actually start the next morning.

Also be sure to check out if you need to reserve any kidsitting ahead of time or in-port kidsitting (some lines have this).

On our last RCCL cruise (w/ our 20 month old) we passed a table with two AO counselors stopping to talk with anyone with kids (and give anyone information about signing up, presumably). When we gave our DD's age, they told us to look for the Aquatots program and let us pass by. But my point is that it was part of embarkation, before even getting on the ship. Hard to miss. You'll find it!

You dont need to sign up in advance for regular activites. They do have a registration the first evening with a welcome aboard show for the kids.... but dont worry... if you miss this, you will just register your kid(s) the first time they go to Adventure Ocean. You will need to sign up in advance for the kids dining with the staff... but this is done the day of the event.

The Orientation/signup Session is usually for parents to sign all the necessary forms that first day. Check kids' patters/programs for that first sign up session. It's not a big deal if you don't go to that first sign up, but I would recommend it if it's your first cruise ever with a child. Like other posters have said, you can sign up any time you bring your child to the kids' club.

Don't forget the free coloring t-shirt that most cruiselines offer all kids.
