Royal Nights?

So how does a 'Royal' Night, Knight, or even Nite, differ from one that is not so?

According to my QV Christmas schedule, all the Balls (all 6) are 'Royal' Nights, so are the ones that are not a load of balls then designated as something else?

It is really impossible to tell what QV will do. QE2 basically ignores them. QM2 doesn't really (at least based on a single transatlantic) do much more.

Obviously things are more obvious in the Queen's Room, but certainly gentlemen seemed to stick with black tie.
