HONOLULU -- A finger of lava from Kilauea Volcano is threatening the Royal Gardens subdivision in lower Puna and could enter the area as early as Thursday night, Civil Defense officials on the Big Island said.

Officials reported on Thursday afternoon that the flow was less than a mile from the upper boundary of the subdivision. Royal Gardens has been mostly destroyed by lava since 1983.

There are only about 10 structures remaining and most are abandoned and in disrepair. Only about three homes are currently occupied, officials said.

Looking at the location of the subdivision on the map, it kinda makes you wonder why it was built there. I guess that particular spot wasn't erupting when it was built but it still seems awfully close to VNP to be building there!

A lava flow that was headed toward Royal Gardens subdivision on the Big Island has stalled, according to Hawaii County officials.

The fast moving aa flow from Kilauea Volcano's east rift zone had moved to within a half-mile of the mauka end of the subdivision by yesterday afternoon.

There are two people who still live in the subdivision that has been mostly overrun by lava flows since 1983.

County officials flew over the area in a helicopter this morning and noticed that the flow had not advanced beyond where it was at 2 p.m. yesterday, indicating that it had stalled.

"I heard something on the radio," he said. "I can see the glow at night. It has been a block up from me dozens of times. I'll get worried when I feel the heat."
