Cornhole on Freedom

Hotfire

Recommended Posts

We sailed on Valor last July and they had cornhole tournaments. In case you don't know, this is a bean bag toss game (similar scoring to horseshoes) that is big in the midwest. You toss bean bags toward a wooden ramp with a hole in it. The idea is to get your bean bags to land on the board or ideally in the hole.

Just wondering if anybody has been on Freedom and seen this game.

I don't even want to say what my first thought was!

Definitely one of these things that has a very different meaning in Canada.

It has the same meaning here in Boston..

Yikes !!!

I was thinking they would be playing that after showing Brokeback Mountain on the Freedom big screen...:p

Sorry, I guess I'm just an old prude (which would be kind of funny to anyone who actually knows me). Though I spent 20 years in the Army and have played in bands in all kinds of dives, the either coarsening of society (or ignorance of the coarse origin of certain words/phrases) offends me. This game is an example. Nothing wrong with the game... just the name. I'm sure someone thought it was funny when they named it. Recently Spirit airlines had a MILF sale (Many Islands Low Fares in THEIR version). Now you KNOW the ad people are taking advantage of the titillation of the OTHER meaning. Dominos followed suite with their BFD (Big Fantastic Deal). I just don't think the rapid coarsening of the language (and society) is that funny.

Surely this did not mean what I thought it meant????:D

I was on Freedom 11/24/07 and they played this several times in the lobby area (by the grand piano). I had no idea it was called "cornhole".

And I agree with the folks in Canada and Boston (I'm a former Mass resident) . . . . cornhole is not a word you would associate with a family-type game - at least in the Northeast.

I'm sorry, folks. I surely didn't intend to offend anyone.

Of course I'm aware of the alternate meaning of the word and DID consider it when posting. However, I did choose to use it because that's how it's listed in Capers.

And yes, we played in the lobby next to the grand piano as well.

Is this anything like Polish Horseshoes?

(At risk of offending any Poles, I can only redeem myself by saying that I learned this game from some friends who are 2 generations removed from Poland...)

Polish Horseshoes being a game played tossing large metal washers onto a board with 3 different sized holes...

Hotfire,

I was not offended by your post (or any other ONE EXAMPLE of what I was talking about). Like I said I was in the Army 20 years, I doubt there are many words or phrases I haven't heard (or in most cases USED. LOL). But I have always felt there was "a time and a place" and am saddened (perhaps thats a better word) by the public use of of certain things. I kind of liken it to pornography. It's always been around, always will be. It used to be hidden in back rooms but now it's on the television on cable and moving onto the networks. While you or I might have even watched some of it, do we really want our 5 and 6 year old granddaughters exposed to it? Ah, the lament of the old man...We now continue with our regulary scheduled broadcast...

We first came across Cornhole Toss about 7 years ago in the Outer Banks of NC. It has since been a staple at our family summertime gatherings. The ships we have been on the past few years have all had it.

The bags are filled with corn, thus the name cornhole. You toss the corn filled bag into a hole in a 2 ft by 4 ft board.

The other game mentioned is called washers, basically the same game, but instead of corn filled bags they toss large washers into the holes.
