marilynbn Posted April 20, 2004 #1 Share Posted April 20, 2004 I spoke with some one from Hawaii Active today about the Hana drive and we came up with the idea of going counter-clockwise and hitting sacred pools first and then continueing around and against traffic. So what do you think? How long would it take us to go from car rental at Kahului airport to Oh'eo gulch. To refresh my dilemna we are trying to either do Hana and Lahaina Luau on 1st day or just do Hana on 2nd day but must get car back to rental by 4pm or so, since ship leaves at 6pm the 2nd day. I know I am crazy... spleen93 Posted April 21, 2004 #2 Share Posted April 21, 2004 Doable. Time from Kahului airport to Oheo Gulch going along the south shore - it'll take around 1-1/2 hours or so, I'm going to guess. Take that with a grain of salt though since I've never done it in this direction before. bug_dan Posted April 21, 2004 #3 Share Posted April 21, 2004 We went clockwise in Nov and I thought from Oheo Gulch to Lahaina was a good bit more than 1 and 1/2 hours, in fact more like about 3 to 4 Still we left Lahaina around 10 am and were back about 5:00 with only a brief stop in Hana for lunch. From Lahaina you have to drive over past the entrance to Haleakala Park and past the Tedeshi Winery. Although the road to the winery is paved and you can make good time, a few miles past the winery, the road narrows then becomes unpaved and speed is reduced to about 10-15 mph. Road is called the Piilani Highway and when dry, lots of dust, when wet it can be very dangerous. Although we did it in a car, I'd definitely recommend a 4 wheel drive SUV. marilynbn Posted April 21, 2004 Author #4 Share Posted April 21, 2004 Okay, so now I need REALLY GOOD clear directions from Alamo car rental at Kahului airport location to Oheo gulch going Counter-Clockwise to Hana. Thanks all...Marilyn
bug_dan Posted April 21, 2004 #5 Share Posted April 21, 2004 Maryilyn, Not difficult at all. Head East on state rte 36 just like you're going directly to Hana. When you come to rte 37, take that as if you're going to Haleakala and stay on that road to the end. It eventually becomes the Piilani Highway. You can get info at the following web site hana highway It's really a beautiful part of Maui that few get to see. Be sure to click on page 2 and the Piilani Highway for some great photos. Dan Infinity Panama Canal 10/17/2004

rnewste Posted April 22, 2004 #8 Share Posted April 22, 2004 We did the full circle Hana drive last month. Would strongly recommend you rent a 4-wheel (or at least a Full size car with good ground clearence). Several areas of rough road that a Compact car may have difficulty with. Plan for a 6 to 8 hour trip from Keihei. Ray
