cruiserlarry Posted January 29, 2008 #1 Share Posted January 29, 2008 I'm looking for one of those car seat travel covers that you can throw the car seat in when you travel via airplane - the ones that you put the car seat in when you check in the car seat at the counter or right before you board. I've seen them at airports, but can't find them at any stores - maybe I'm looking in the wrong place. Any help??? Thanks!
Mrslou37 Posted January 29, 2008 #2 Share Posted January 29, 2008 cruiserlarry, you might want to try http://www.onestepahead.com. I believe that they cost about 35.00. The one that I saw even had wheels on it. We have a DD and we do not use her car seat when we fly we purchased the kids fly safe FAA approved seat belt. No need to use the car seat. For taxi rides we purchased the eddie bauer portable car seat. Need any more info, just let me know.
Kerry's Girls Posted January 29, 2008 #3 Share Posted January 29, 2008 I got mine at Right Start www.rightstart.com for about $30. They have wheels and backpack straps. If you have large seats (like Britax) you'll want to make sure they fit before you buy. Best, Mia
Eclipsepearl Posted January 30, 2008 #4 Share Posted January 30, 2008 Save your money and keep your child safer by bringing it onboard. On my last transatlantic flight, about three weeks ago, three of our four bags didn't make it. They were returned three days later but I dread to think what would have happened if I had not brought my 3 year old's car seat onboard. We had a 2 hour car ride home but no problem. I had the car seat and our one lonely bag and away we went safely. If your car seat if FAA approved (most sold in the U.S. are) and the child has a seat, your seat cannot be refused onboard. http://www.faa.gov/passengers/fly_children/crs/ If your child is under 2 and you did not purchase a seat for him or her, ask at check-in if the flight is full. If not, you can ask nicely if an empty seat can be placed next to you. The CARES harness is good because it does give parents another choice but it's expensive at $75, can only be used for a short time and can ONLY be used on flights. By contrast, there are some solid, good car seats for $40 that can then be used in the car. Do what works for you! To get the seat through the airport, all sorts of gizmos are sold like this; http://www.gogobabyz.com/products/gogo_k... Some parents manage to bungee cord their seat to their stroller or make it fit inside. They also have backpacks for car seats, which would mean having your hands free. I simply use a small metal luggage cart with an extra bungee cord and it works great. I skip on the stroller and she can even ride in it (and she's 3 1/2). She usually prefers to walk and then I can put the carry-on bag(s) on it. It didn't cost me a thing since I already had the luggage cart and the bungee cord! I take a car seat every time on long-haul (11 1/2 and 10 1/2 hour flights) alone with three kids so it can be done! Do what works for you and practice at home before heading to the airport. I do find that my children are more settled and sleep better on our long-haul trips in their familiar car seat. It wasn't really a big deal to bring it and you'll have peace of mind that the seat wont be lost or damaged in the hold. http://cpsafety.com/articles/airplanetravel.aspx http://www.aap.org/advocacy/releases/travelsafetytips.cfm my own article on flying with children; http://flyingwithchildren.blogspot.com Have a good trip, Sharon ex-Flight Attendant, 13 years 8 years of flying with three kids (since each was 4 months old)
live4vacation Posted January 30, 2008 #5 Share Posted January 30, 2008 I have seen the carseat bags at Babies R Us, they have them in the car seat section on the display with the car seat mirrors/toys.
sunrise&set Posted February 1, 2008 #6 Share Posted February 1, 2008 Do you mean one of these? Someone on these boards wrote about this bag and I purchased it but haven't received it yet, so I can't give you a review. I bought it online at Target for $13.99. We did not purchase an airline seat for our DS who will be 13 months when we cruise because the airfare was so high, although I'd rather have him in a seat :(
