Wer2pats Posted April 29, 2004 #1 Share Posted April 29, 2004 I have been told that pure vanilla flavoring is produced from orchids grown in Hawii. Is this true? Where can I buy some when we get there next week for our cruise?
Kayla's Mom Posted April 29, 2004 #2 Share Posted April 29, 2004 Bizarre but true (I think) -- this wa a question during our trivia pub quiz on the star...where does vanill come from. You certainly see the pods everywhere on the ground in Hawaii. I looked in a couple specialty cooking shops and couldn't find any Hawaiian vanilla. You just reminded me to look online.... Molokai-Chuck Posted April 29, 2004 #3 Share Posted April 29, 2004 Having seen the vanilla plantations in the Islands of Tahiti ...... and been to Hawaii several times.....I have never seen the vanilla plant or any of its products in Hawaii. Now that I have said that......you know I am going to be wrong! Also....not much in the way of plant life/fruit is allowed to leave Hawaii....per the dept. of Ag. bug_dan Posted April 29, 2004 #5 Share Posted April 29, 2004 I remember back in 1988 on our first trip to the Islands that we took a large bottle of vanilla extract along for a local family, supposively that was hard to find in Hawaii. spleen93 Posted April 30, 2004 #6 Share Posted April 30, 2004 There *is* some vanilla that's grown here in Hawaii (which is an orchid technically) but obviously, Tahiti is better known for its vanilla. It is difficult to find Hawaii grown vanilla here on the islands. I believe that it's being grown on the Big Island. However, in this day and age, it is not difficult at all to find (non-Hawaiian) vanilla extract in Hawaii.
