meidda Posted February 23, 2008 #1 Share Posted February 23, 2008 How close is the Airport Beach to the Maho Shopping Center? And can anyone suggest their prefered shop for cameras and camcorders. thanks
gtaylor Posted February 23, 2008 #2 Share Posted February 23, 2008 The casino and shopping area is just across the road from Maho Beach. (click) This website says The Maho shopping and entertainment area has shops that stay open until 10 p.m. or later. Shopping includes everything from Swiss watches, French perfume, British cashmeres, Chinese embroidery, Japanese cameras and electronics, Indonesian batiks and Italian leather goods, plus fine jewelry, crystal, linens, porcelain and liquor. But I don't distinctlly remember any electronics shops. There are several along Front Street in downtown Philipsburg. gary
nsbee Posted February 23, 2008 #3 Share Posted February 23, 2008 The best shopping for electronics is in Philipsbrug on front Street. There are many to choose from but my favorite is Boolchand's across the street from the RC Church. Be sure to bargain wherever you shop
meidda Posted February 24, 2008 Author #4 Share Posted February 24, 2008 Thanks for the information. I am leaving in a few days and trying to configure by itinerary. For bargaining for a camera what % should I shoot for?
kal Posted February 24, 2008 #5 Share Posted February 24, 2008 Do your homework now to determine what you want. Then find the best internet price. Use that as a basis on your negotiation with the St. Maarten vendor.
gtaylor Posted February 24, 2008 #6 Share Posted February 24, 2008 Thanks for the information. I am leaving in a few days and trying to configure by itinerary. For bargaining for a camera what % should I shoot for? I'd run over to Costco or Sam's Club, etc. tomorrow and buy something, charge it up and enjoy filming your trip from the beginning. I truly don't think that there is much of a savings between Warehouse Club purchases here and down island, and you will have the camera from the beginning of your vacation. gary
bcirish Posted February 26, 2008 #7 Share Posted February 26, 2008 If you are looking for a camera go online to Adorama or B&H Photo or One Call - these are all reputable online camera and electronics companies. Use them to look at prices. Write down numbers on those which you are considering. I have purchased two cameras in the islands but did not much of an advantage and the last time i looked found them cheaper in the states. The biggest issue you will have are the following: If you do not know specifically what you are looking for you may end up with something that is more or less what we call a clearance item here at home. Very important - you DO NOT want anything without a USA warranty and ask to see it - grey market on cameras drops the price significantly because you do not get a warranty - it does not work - too bad. Boochands has a good rep - looked all around and bought there both times. I do not remeber anything in Maho and do not like the electronic stores in Marigot. Good luck.
