Sunday in Athens

Recommended Posts

Has anyone ever been in Athens on a Sunday? Does it affect store openings and admission times to the Acropolis? How about local crowds? Are there less locals in the tourist areas on Sunday making navigation easier?

We were in Athens in November and found that some of the jewelry stores and department stores were closed on Sunday. Most of the stores and restaurants the Plaka were open, though.

There was a nice crowd at the changing of the Evzone guards, but not to the extent where you felt pushed or shoved. We walked from the Parliment building down Mitropoleos St and there were loads of vendors in that area, as well as around the square at the end of the street, but also a fair amouint of people both walking and in all the restaurants. The flea market area was also a busy area. I'm sorry I can't comment on the Acropolis on a Sunday, because we went there on Saturday.

All in all, we encountered some crowds, but no worse than other big cities. You should be alright.
