Can't Wait To Anger The "chair Hogs"

I hope so becuase it's bed time... I'll check back in in the morning..

OOPS too late... She got here first. I guess she'll just have to wallow in it all herself. I say we all leave her here wishing she had her "bullies" to keep her company while she's crying herself to sleep. Too bad she doesn't deal with confrontation the way an adult would (BTW I'm 20 I can be childish all I want) and just walk away!!

Being 20 is no excuse for your demeaning words. You really should apologize, and try volunteering for Special Olympics...if you can be an adult long enough to admit your error....

Last summer we were on the 5 day Victory to Canada and were blessed with fabulous weather. We all thought we were in the Carib.! Now my question is we are a family with 4 DD's ranging in age from 7 to 17. 2 of the dd's still need my assistance when getting lunch on the Lido deck. Now the lines are super long and people push alot so it takes around an hour to gather food get a table, eat and return to the chair. We might even want to relax for 10 minutes or so before leaving the table, going to the bathroom and returning to the chairs. I think that this summer when we go on the Freedom in the Med that I will possibly leave a sign saying what time we left, where we are and when we expect to return. Considering the time involved in actually eating in the Lido, do you think one hour would be too long to leave all of our stuff on the chair? What I am saying is yes, 6am saving is totally ridiculous but we must be considerate of families or couples or friends that have just left their chair to eat and have gotten caught up in the Lido crowds (also, what if they went to the dining room?) I say during the midday we should respect this unfortunate fact that the dining areas are very very crowded and not rush to throw someone's stuff overboard. So what is the answer? I am perplexed here. BTW, the sun deck is usually available isn't it? Why not utilize it or do you find those chairs hogged as well? What might be a thought would be for Carnival to assign chairs to cabins. No the sun worshippers would get mad if they were not in the sun and vice versa. Years ago at some la di da resort in Miami I recall that in order to get a chair you needed to be escorted to the chair by the pool attendant. Tip expected. How about those that just must have a chair actually reserve them (yes, for a fee or maybe not) Just like golf tee times. Carnival could actually have enough chairs for everyone or at least have extras around in an emergency. Just some thoughts but for us this summer in the Med, just fresh air, great ports, chairs on the sun deck, not too much baking in the sun and watching the kids on the slide and oh yes, making afternoon tea on sea days!;)

No need to be preplexed. 1+ hour is much too long to expect the chair you were in to remain available to only you until you decide to leave it.

If it is going to take you 1+ hour to dress your chidren, stand in line, eat, utilize the rest rooms, and "relax" at the table for 10 min, them take you stuff with you and you will not have to worry about it being put in a more appropriate place.

When you finish what you want to do, you can return and look for a chair just like the people that were looking for a chair while you were eating, etc, and hogging chairs that they could have been using. I hear there are usually chairs available on the sun deck.

A few weeks ago on the Victory the chair hogs were out in full force early every sea day. At about 9:30 am we managed to find two lounge chairs toward the aft on the deck above Lido. Beside me were 4 chairs each with neatly placed single towels.

Nice story!! Great about the older gentleman finding kindred spirits and buying everyone a round - awesome!!

IF everyone played fair and was simply considerate of other passengers there shouldn't be any problems with deck chairs but unfortunately human nature just doesn't seem to be working that way often now adays :( But we can always hope !

IMO your situation doesn't fit under what I classify as a "serious chair hog" that gets up early in the morning, saves multiple chairs and then rarely ever actually uses them but prevents anyone else from using them. And those are the people that I am most frustrated by and honestly the easiest for the cruiseline to enforce the rules with. Eliminate them and you would have eliminated much of the major problem IMO. So If I saw you enjoying your chairs and all leave to go to lunch and not return for an hour I would not be moving your things or encouraging anyone else too. But I also admit that if I saw that you all had been gone for that hour and someone else did come along and remove your items I would not rush to your defense either. I do think that anytime a family is leaving the area knowing ahead of time that they were going to be or very likely were going to be gone for an hour or more they should take their things with them and expect to need to find new chairs when they returned because if everyone did this there wouldn't be a chair problem because there would be a constant turn over of chairs. When we wish to eat while laying in the sun we take turns getting our food and bring our tray back to our lounge chair to eat. Which never takes more than 20 minutes even if we use the bathroom before getting our food.

It was nice ! And proved that even though at moments throughout the cruise it felt like we were among a group of very selfish passengers there were still plenty of great people too ! :)

Are people's butts permanently glued to these chairs? Does it mean the chair is yours for the rest of the day or the rest of the cruise if you get it first? It seems if you need to go for lunch or do something else other then playing in the pool, one should vacate the chair. If you want to come back to the pool later on, look for one. I have only cruised on Princess and I never had any problem with finding a chair. Granted, I move far away from the crowds.

I was in a great mood until I read that first post, and the many that followed.

Then perhaps you should have stopped at the first post. Seems silly to continue to read something that ruins a great mood. Unless, of course, you were just looking to pick a fight.

:D We are going on the Valor on Sunday and I just can't wait for the first "at sea" day. I'm going to head on out to the pool and look around for the chairs with the token flip flop, sunscreen or book, any group of chairs with no living, breathing person and proceed to stack up their stuff and plunk my butt down.:p Don't get me wrong, I don't see a problem with an actual living person, just one, saving some seats for family.

Last year on the Triumph, a woman had the nerve to make up laminated signs with "Reserved for the *** family" on them and stick them to about 7 chairs. Well, you can imagine what happened, my husband and I and 2 other women took down those signs and put them aside. She came out about 1 hr later and was flabergasted that her chairs weren't still saved. Who was she, the Queen of England??? She was so pissed off and was really concerned about where her signs were. You know to quote her" she spent a lot of time making those signs" . I told her she couldn't use them anyway and she yelled at me to shut up. NICE!!

Hope I have as much fun this yr removing chair hogs stuff.

The signs on the chairs reminds me of a recent children's Xmas program at our church. Everyone always likes to be close to the front to see the little darlings, of course.

The first row of pews had a computer-made sign on the side saying, "Reserved for the _____________family". And everyone else left it there for them--at least they did eventually show up. That takes about as much nerve as anything I've ever heard of. I'm still flabbergasted about this. Some churchly behavior!

This sense of entitlement seems to permeate our culture these days. And it only seems to be getting worse.

We rarely agree, but im with you on this. These ladies are cracking me up :D

It is like a car wreck that you can't just look away from isn't it?

But back on topic. I would absolutely remove someone's items from an abandoned chair. Before I did I would ask the people around if anyone has been there in the past hour. I wouldn't throw it overboard or on the deck, but instead give it to the first Carnival staff person I saw...even if it is a drink person. I think there is a balance between being assertive and being aggressive. When and if the person returned while I was still there I would politely tell them the Carnival person that has their items. If they want to take it to another level then that is up to them....I have found that the best response to an abrasive person is simply "I am not having this conversation with you" and rolling over. (or backing away from the keyboard)

I also wonder about someone who said that they might go to the dining room and eat, then come back. Don't you need to change out of your bathing suit and clean up a bit first, and then change back into your bathing suit and reapply sunblock before you come back?

I would imagine very few people sit in the sun baking all day long so if people would use the chairs when they wanted them, and let someone else enjoy them when they didn't, it wouldn't be a problem finding a chair when you needed one.
