Montreal to Boston cruises

Recommended Posts

When is the best time to see the fall foliage on this type of cruise? Early September, late September or in October?

It's going to be different every year, depending on the weather. Also, foliage begins in Canada earlier than in Boston, generally. Once we were in New Hampshire at the end of October and it was prime foliage season -- but generally it's going to be earlier than that. Late September and early October is a good bet, but you can never be sure.

Thanks, Two if by Sea. What about the amount/chances of rain during those times. I know there is no certainty in weather predictions but is there a general "better" time between early September and early October? Coming from south western Oregon we know that by and large June through September is rainless, so I was hoping Eastern Canada had a rain pattern as well.

Rainfall in Montreal:

92.6 mm in September

75.4 mm in October

July and August are pretty much like September as far as rainfall is concerned. The average is 12 days with some precipitation. Of which 5 have over 5 mm, 3 have over 10 mm and 1 has over 25 mm on average. October is a bit lower in each category.

Rainfall in Halifax:

103.8 mm in September

126.4 mm in October

The rainfall amounts tend to be higher in Halifax, being on the ocean.

Climate norms for Canada can be found at http://www.climate.weatheroffice.ec.gc.ca/climate_normals/index_e.html

Incidentally, there are 25.4 mm in an Imperial inch.

My general sense of rain in New England is that it's more likely in October than September. But early September could be quite hot and is not likely to be very colorful yet. A lot of people go out Columbus Day weekend for foliaging. As compared to Labor Day weekend there's really no comparison -- Labor Day is basically still summer around here.

In New Brunswick the foliage is generally at its peak around the middle of October and if there are no bad storms, it can still be quite lovely at the end of October.
