Cabo is not an area for surfing geologically speaking. But the geology is what makes for spectacular whale watching in the winter. There is a very deep canyon (trench) right off the coast of Cabo. This canyon is what the whales love. It starts somewhere north of California and extends all the way south at least as far as Puerto Vallarta. Near Cabo, it gets extremely close to the shore. There is virtually no continental shelf on the Pacific Side of Cabo. Wave's form in literally the last 5 feet of water. This does sometimes create spectacular waves crashing on the shore. It also creates a VERY dangerous rip current. This canyon also turns the corner and heads up into the Gulf Of California (aka: Sea Of Cortez) for aways. Bottom line, no surfing in Cabo. For the most part, there is also no swimming except at 2 beaches right at Cabo. Medano Beach and Lover's Beach are those 2 areas for swimming. There are also a couple of swimming/snorkel areas in protected bays a little north of Cabo on the "corridor" side heading towards San Jose Del Cabo.

There are a couple of surfing beaches about 90 minutes north of Cabo on the Pacific Coast side near the town of Todos Santos. In that area, the canyon is further out to sea.

Best bet for your Cabo visit might be snorkeling, para-sailing, ATV's, or jet ski's.
