Flam to Gudvangen

We are taking a Fred Olsen cruise to Norway calling at Flam. This follows FO's usual itinerary spending only the morning in Flam then moving on the short distance to Gudvangen for the afternoon.

We would like to do the Flam railway but looking at the timetable it looks impossible to do the round trip and get back before the ship sails at noon. However I believe it is possible to take public transport (either bus or ferry) between Flam and Gudvangen to catch up with the ship in the afternoon. Has anyone tried this and does it work?

The alternative is the ships tour which includes the railway but also involves a 'vertiginous' road journey which takes in thirteen hairpin bends - something my DW thinks she could manage without! Anyone tried that also?

Any advice much appreciated.

J.

Have done the railway and it's worth doing. I can't answer the second part of your question. Would it possible to email FO and see what they advise? We stayed in Flam for longer. I wouldn't like to think of the ship 'leaving' us.
