Just got our information pack through and could not believe some of the prices that have been quoted for excursions on our cruise. Is it me or do others who cruise with FO find these prices generally high.

Well yes they are expensive but probably on a par with other cruise lines. The problem we found was that many tours are a complete rip off, not because of the price - we do not object if the tour is interesting and well run, but because they often are nothing much more than a ride in a coach.

I am thinking of a tour at some obscure port in India that we unfortunatly booked which consisted of a long journey on a coach, 10 minutes at a temple that was a complete waste of time, a quick visit to a very interesting toilet and a long return journey to the ship.

Many areas of the world just do not have anywhere interesting to visit, but tours are the big money spinner for cruise lines so we do need to read the small print before booking. Often best to spend the day doing your own thing.

Depending on your itinerary a lot of trips you could organise yourself, we have just returned from Greece and Turkey on the Balmoral and the majority of the excursions FO offered were available to book locally at a lot lower price. Especially, Turkey for Ephasus and Dalyan. The only destination we wished we had booked some excursions was in the Norwegian Fjords last year when some of the small villages we stopped at were remote with only one bus every couple of hours and no taxi's and you could look round the place in 10minutes!

Excursions are always a rip off with normally a 50% mark up, this is the way they make their profit on us from excursions and drinking onboard.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality & cost of the Fred Olsen excursions when on our Cruise in April. The description in the tour book told us exactly what to expect. We had some good excursions & some great ones...snorkelling/catamaran in Belize, underwater boat in Roatan Island, rafting on the Martha Brae in Jamaica. The only disappointing tour was the one we booked ourselves with a local tour company (Paradise tours) in Guatemala....nothing to see & very expensive!

Of course the excursions are run by the local tour operators who set the price, whichever cruisline you go with ,the price of tours is more or less the same.

Remembering that the cruise line add their markup to the local prices.
