Hyatt Maui vs. Grand Wailea

Has anyone stayed at one/both of these hotels? My family is debating on where to stay; we hear they are both very nice. A lot of people have said to stay at the Grand Wailea. Is the Grand Wailea that much better then the Hyatt becase we can get a Hyatt room a lot cheaper? Any input would be much appreciated!! Thanks in advance.

The Grand Wailea is by far the nicer hotel, nicest hotel I've stayed at in Hawaii and we go to the neighbor islands quite a bit. The pool area at the Grand Wailea is like a water park with slides and a jungle river and water elevator and much more. Seating gets reserved fast, from what we could figure, people put out their towels to reserve beach chairs the night before which was a pisser. As far as the rest of the hotel goes, five star all the way. There are cheaper options to eat elsewhere near by so you can save a bit if you eat away from the hotel. If you have kids from 2yrs to 99yrs old, you'll love the Grand Wailea. BUT YOU'LL BE PAYING FOR IT TOO!!

 

The Hyatt Regency Maui is a very nice hotel, a bit older and on the Kaanapali side of the island. When it was built it was considered the top hotel on Maui but has since been surpassed. The pool area is nice though not nearly as nice as the Grand Wailea. From what I remember of the pool there are rope bridges, waterfalls and slides there too though it's been over a decade since we stayed there.

 

Either hotel has great golfing near by. Kaanapali courses and Wailea and Makena courses are world reknown. You can't go wrong golfing on either side.

We have friends who stayed at the Grand Wailea last year and had a horrid room. It reeked of mold and was in pretty lousy condition. They said the grounds and facilities were okay, but not what they expected for the price. Of course, this is second-hand, so take it with a grain of salt. Our only experience actually at the Grand Wailea was years ago when we walked through to go to the beach bar and then walk along the beach after imbibing. They were doing extensive renovations, it was mid-September, and the place was deserted. We were underwhelmed. Wailea beach is really wonderful, but Ka'anapali isn't bad either.
