Thanksgiving Day in Hilo

We will be on the Zaandam in Hilo on Thanksgiving day. Was wondering what may be open? We are planning to rent a car to travel to VNP but am not sure what else may be open to visit. Any suggestions or ideas?

Aka Aka and Rainbow Falls will be open, but regular shops and stores will be close for the holiday, just like they would back home.

 

VNP can take a whole day if you get out and hike a little and you could always drive over to the Black Sand beach. There will be plenty of geological wonders open, but you will be hard pressed to find a store or anything like that doing business.

Thank you for your response. I thought that might be the case but just wanted to confirm. We were planning on renting a car and spending most of the day at VNP anyway. Just wondered about stopping somewhere to get water and snacks. Thank you.

I live here on the Big Island and I know that Safeway in Hilo was open on Thanksgiving Day. I was amazed...and laughing wondering if anyone was in there buying a frozen turkey??!! So, you should be able to score some snacks there. I also think that possibly Walmart may be open...but I am not sure about that :confused:
