gigivic Posted April 12, 2004 #1 Share Posted April 12, 2004 My husband was a boy scout master for 12 years and he lives the moto. Do you think we would raise suspicions if he carriess, GPS (told him the capt had one) walkie talkies, short wave radio (he said it has a clock? he also has a HAM radio lic) binocculars and God only knows what else. If the ship goes down he's the guy you'd want to be with. He'll be carrying all of this on in his back pack so no hiding. Will we make it? the_psycho Posted April 12, 2004 #4 Share Posted April 12, 2004 Gigivic, On our last cruise, there were 4 former boyscouts in two rooms, and between us, we had 6 walkie talkies, 2 shortwave radios, 3 AM/FM radios, 2 GPS, 2 pair binoculars, 4 digital cameras, 1 digital video camera, 1 Irridium phone, 4 dive knives, and more assorted gear than you could shake a stick at. The only thing that they had a problem with was the long sheath knives, and they kept them for us except when we were diving. the_psycho Posted April 12, 2004 #6 Share Posted April 12, 2004 Its not against any rules to take a GPS on an airplane, they just ask you not to turn it on after they close the cabin door. superjerryw Posted April 12, 2004 #7 Share Posted April 12, 2004 Nothing you have mentioned sounds too suspicious to me. springtxbill Posted April 12, 2004 #8 Share Posted April 12, 2004 GPS is actually one of the electronic items allowed to be used once up in the air (at least on Southwest). It's pretty hard to get the satellites to hook up through the small window opening and the speed of travel to get the first fixes. Bill D RCCL Song of Norway 7/79? Tylara Posted April 12, 2004 #9 Share Posted April 12, 2004 I just got back from the Radiance yesterday. I took my GPSr and my binoculars in my carry-on bag and had no trouble at any checkpoint. It was great to leave the GPSr on the balcony and track our progress, then take it with me in port. I have some interesting track logs to download, between the trolley tour in Key West and the Lamanai/New River safari in Belize! Tell your husband not to worry and to enjoy his toys. Just make sure to bring lots of batteries or rechargeables and a charger! ss-sunset Posted April 12, 2004 #10 Share Posted April 12, 2004 My DH and I are both Techie types. In Oct we are carrying 2 laptops, 2 digital cameras, 1 digital camcorder, 2 Ham Radio's(we are both operators), 1 GPS, 1 router to play w/ in the room) and several packs of CDRW"S. We plan to fly and carry it on. Last July we carried just about the same amount and had no problems. It just took a little longer to get through security. the_psycho Posted April 12, 2004 #11 Share Posted April 12, 2004 ss-sunset, You might want to check again with the HAM radios that you are planning on taking. Even though you are licensed to operate the radios in the US, you are probably not licensed to use them while in the territorial waters or in port of other countries. I don't know where you are visiting, but this could be a serious problem for the authorities. ss-sunset Posted April 12, 2004 #12 Share Posted April 12, 2004 We can use them while in Internatinal waters. In order to use them in port, we have to contact the country in question which we plan to do. We can also use them while still in Miami.
