Lunch in Halifax

Is there a place to eat a lunch of steamed lobster in Halifax that is near the pier /or easy to find?

Hi Puli! Before I can answer you, you have to know this is coming from a fellow Puli owner (and Halifax resident) :)

 

You can pretty much get lobster at any restaurant in downtown Halifax. So it depends on what kind of price you want to pay, atmosphere you are looking for, etc. All the places I'll recommend are an easy walk from the Pier (ie. under 15 minutes walk). Also keep in mind, that my lower end by in no way means bad ... just cheaper and not as fancy. Here are a few options:

 

High End (~$50) - 5 Five Fishermen - www.fivefishermen.com

Mid End (~$30-$40) - Salty's - www.saltys.ca (this one is overlooks the harbour)

Mid End (~$30-$35) - McKelvies - www.mckelvies.ca

Low End (~$20-$25) - Bluenose II Restaurant

 

These places sell on current market prices (for the most part) so my numbers are relative estimates. If you let me know a bit more as to what you are looking for, I can give more choices, detail, directions, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions! We are transplanted Easterners and all we want is a basic plain lobster with maybe a side of slaw!

 

Aren't you lucky to be owned by pulik! Do you breed and show? We did both for over 20 years when we lived in Somerset NJ. Now we are retired and live in Ashland, OR with two "pound dogs" but still keep in touch with our many puli friends. Our kennel name was Boldogsag and our line came basically from Wallbanger Pulik out of Penn and New England. We were very lucky to have finished several champions but basically our dogs were part of the family, pets first and show dogs last!

First things first.. You want to go to Murphys on the Water. They are really really easy to find. Just leave the pier and walk along the waterfront towards downtown. After about 3/4 of a mile, there will be a long green building on your right, built on a wharf that extends into the harbour. That's Murphy's on the Water. If you get to the local transit ferry terminal (or worse, casino), you've gone to far. Turn around and walk back towards the ship. They have a great lobster lunch (with potato salad and coleslaw of course). Make sure you ask for a couple extra "bibbs" for souveniers :) Here's some websites with more information:

As for our Puli... We don't breed or show her (or plan to) - she's just a pet. We got from Windkist Kennels in Edmonton, Alberta. I had a puli as a child and that's why wanted to get another. We love their playful excitement, size and friendly (yet watchdog like) temperment. Not to mention the cute factor :)

 

I really hope you enjoy your time in Halifax! Hopefully the weather cooperates for you. The lobsters will be delicious!

I can't think of any no frills, right off the boat, lobster pounds along the waterfront in downtown Halifax. All of the local grocery stores carry lobster and there is one within 5 minutes walk of the Pier. However, they are not as good or as fresh as the pound or fish markets though.

 

A short cab ride (relatively for Halifax anyways) is Clearwater Seafood (http://www.clearwater.ca) on the Bedford Highway (any cab will know where to go). They are a pretty large seafood company here on the Canadian East Coast... The lobsters there will certainly be fresher then the grocery store. Expect to pay ~$30-35 return to the Pier. Their market on the Bedford Hwy is their company headquarters so it's certainly more then a "no frills" place.

 

"Fishermans Market" is also on the Bedford Hwy. It's near Clearwater, and you guessed it, it's a seafood market. Not as fancy as Clearwater, but still offers some frills...

 

If you want lobster pound, you've got to go out to the coast... A trip to Peggy's Cove will give you the opportunity to go to Ryer & Ryer Lobster Ltd. Ask your tour provider / transportation provider about going there... They are about 2km (1.25 miles) from Peggys Cove and sell fresh lobsters in a no frills setting...

What a hoot with a puli.... they either outshine you or act like it is beneath them! Do you have herding trials? They excell in that as you probably know from your dog trying to get the entire family in one room or on one bed! I really miss having a "mop"!

Yeah, MOTW is readily accessible. I can't remember if there is a step up into the restaurant or not. It is on the "ground" floor so you should not have a problem either way (anyone will be happy to assist). If the weather is nice, they've got a patio at the end of the wharf where you can eat outside.

We live about 2.5 hrs. away from Halifax and we go there specifically for the Greek food at Opa's. It's within easy walking distance from the pier and has wonderful food. Views are wonderful. You may like it! Shelly:)

We shave her once she starts to get bothered by the matting... Usually 4-5 months or so. Those are sad times though 'cause she's not nearly as cute. Since we take her in the water, we haven't corded her. She'd be forever drying ;) As far as training goes, a friend of ours is a trainer and so we get pointers and lessons from him... You can't beat "The Dog Whisperer" either :) I wish we could take her herding. She's very very smart and definitely herds us around the house when we are playing games. You can really tell that herding is in the genes! I would like to get a white puli at some point... We'll see what the future has in store!

There's tonnes of non-seafood restaurants in town here... Even the seafood places however, will have your typical land-lubber staples. It really depends on what kind of food you are looking for though.

My mom and I had a great lunch near the Maritime Museum (MOM wanted to see the Titanic items). It was an Irish pub called the OLD TRIANGLE IRISH ALEHOUSE.

Yes.. The major ones anyways (Visa, Mastercard and in most cases American Express). A few restaurants may take Discover and other common US cards but I couldn't tell you which places...
