St. John's car rental?

Has anyone had any experience renting a car near or at the cruise ship terminal in St. John's Newfoundland?

And taking their own "tour"?

 

We're thinking it would be fairly easy to get around, and rather than hiring a taxi or taking a ship tour, it would be more fun to go exploring the coast on our own for several hours.
