Travel Mom Posted September 18, 2008 #1 Share Posted September 18, 2008 Looking to go to Prince Rupert as one of our stops. What is there to do there? Pros and Cons welcome!!
LeftcoastBC Posted September 18, 2008 #2 Share Posted September 18, 2008 The only con I can think of is that it often rains there :) Smallish downtown easily accessed from the cruise dock if you are tied up intown. Museum close by to ship. Great fishing spot and there are some tours to bear area's. If you have never seen a cannery there is Port Edward part of our National Park scheme. It's out of town a bit but well worth the effort if that's in your interests. http://web.mac.com/andrewcthamilton/iWeb/NPC/welcome.html Just another coastal town but in BC. Have fun. cruiserbryce Posted September 21, 2008 #3 Share Posted September 21, 2008 we just came back from there and while there wasnt much to do we had a great time. I golfed at Prince Rupert Golf Club (very nice course, challenging and fun)...family went to the museum and then we walked around downtown afterwards...plan on rain though...the people we talked to say they get rain nearly everyday

BCHappyGal Posted September 27, 2008 #5 Share Posted September 27, 2008 Dear Travel Mom Prince Rupert is one of hte better stops as it is not commercialized like all the Alaska ports with shops owned by the cruise lines selling the same old souvenirs. Yes the sun does shine there on occasion and it is the most beautiful city in the world when the sun shines.... Great chance to see wild life there - deer think they own the place and just wonder around eating grass whereever they feel like it - Prince Rupert is located on Kain Island and there is no hunting allowed on the island. You may well see a bear - eagles abound and often see whales in the harbor plus there are lots of totem poles scattered thruout the city that you can easily walk to. As far as sighseeing goes you have a couple of museums right by the dock (city and railway) you also have a native carving shed Tours will take you to a Native Village - Fishery Museum in an actual Cannery - to see the Grizzley Bears in their protected habitat - fishing of course and more.... I lived there for 10 years and still have many friends there and yes we hve picked Alaskan cruises because they include a stop in PR
cab519 Posted September 27, 2008 #6 Share Posted September 27, 2008 Lived in Prince Rupert (Rupert for short) for 7 years in the 90s, and visited once since on a cruise. Cow Bay is the area right at the dock, lots of small great shops, none owned by cruise lines, so you won't hear about them on the ship. Smiles is a GREAT seafood restaurant - near the dock - try their fish and chips or Halibut. Breakers is a nice pub in Cow Bay overlooking the ocean. 3rd Ave has lots of non-cruise line owned stores, and is a short walk, and, last time I was there on a cruise, there was a free or low cost shuttle bus. As mentioned, Port Edward cannery museum (an old cannery) is great (about a 20 minute drive), and the Museum in Rupert is good too (very close to the cruise port). Nice park (next to Museum) overlooking the ocean and the cruise port. Good views from up by the Hospital. When I was there, there was a dirt road up the local mountain that had fantastic views (when sunny). Not sure if still open. Yes, it does rain lots there (rainiest city in Canada, with city being 10,000 or more population). We used to call it "Rinse Rupert".
CowPrincess Posted September 27, 2008 #7 Share Posted September 27, 2008 There was discussion on the Alaska forum about a bear tour in Prince Rupert. I googled and found this: http://www.seashorecharters.com/bearwatching.php Not sure if it is the same one, but it is worth having a look at :)
