Grand Cayman: Snorkel w/out stingrays

Hey all -

 

Want to do a boat snorkelling excursion that does NOT stop in Stingray city. I read something about a reef and wreck tour, but can't find an operator (or am not looking in the right place!). Can someone help?

If you want to snorkel without stingrays you might consider snorkeling without a boat. :) Just south of GeorgeTown is Eden Rock and Sunset House. Both offer shore snorkeling whenever you want for as long as you want, assuming you leave time to catch the boat. There are dive centers at each who rent gear and can show you their reef maps so you can go on your own. It's alot cheaper (free if you have your own gear) and the snorkeling is great on the reefs.

At this point, I think we really want the boat. We are three married moms going solo and want to relax and not plan out the day too much! Ok, I'll say it, we want to be LAZY!!

Most all the cruise lines do a reef and wreck tour that snorkels off a boat on Cheeseburger Reef and the Wreck of the "Cali". My wife and I did that tour the last time we were in Grand Cayman and had a ball, the boat wasn't very crowded becasue the thundering heard went to Stingray City, and the reef and wreck site were fantastic.

I agree with Flying Pirate, my DH and I did the reef and wreck dive in Cayman and it was fun. Not too crowded and we went in April during Easter break! We also did not want to do the Stingray City and snorkel combo that year but have done it since and loved it! It goes out pretty far on a catamaran and stops at 2 incredible reefs after SC. Tons of fish, coral, conchs and starfish. We got some beautiful pictures. We used the carnival tour for the reef and wreck dive and a private tour company for the SC/snorkel, which we have booked again for this year. I believe Carnival still offers the reef/wreck trip on their site. They take you out just a short distance from the shore, I believe we could still see our ship from the site. You will still have time to shop or sightsee in Cayman if you do this excursion! :)

Thanks for the replies. The excursion through the cruise line is the only 'reef and wreck' offering I have been able to find....I've done stingray city - didn't really care for it or the huge crowds - and neither of my friends care to try it!

i've done wreck and reef----excellent!

 

you can usually see tarpon, and i've even seen sea turtles.
