Recommended Posts

Hello,

Whats the Best Hotels for a Vancouver Cruise Ship Harbour View? We would like to stay somewhere the night before we board our Alaskan Cruise in May on the Carnvial Pride, and hopefully see the ships sail in the morning before we board?????

Thanks

If you're leaving from the Canada Place pier, than you should stay at the Pan Pacific as it is right at the pier. However most cruise ships will all be departing at the roughly the same time as yours, so you won't see any setting sail in the morning; and they arrive at the port usually very early in the morning (think 6:00 a.m.) so you'd have to be up early.

Carnival this past season did use Canada Place but that can change from year to year and it is possible that they could use the Ballantyne Pier next year. There are no hotels in the vacinity of Ballantyne but around Canada Place the ones that leap to mind include, the Pan Pacific, Fairmont Waterfront Place, the Tower at the Terminal City Club and the Marriott Renaissance. In all cases though I would want to specify that you wanted a room facing the harbour so that you can see the cruise ships. They all depart Vancouver about 5 pm and arrive in the harbour about 6 am and are tied up by 7 am. Enjoy :)

My aunt lives in North Vancouver and the view is gorgeous. Lonsdale Quay Market is very nice with lots of fresh vegetables, fruits, cheese, etc. and some boutiques. They also have an hotel (but I've never stayed there). If you ask for a city view, it's postcardly beautiful and if you get up early enough, you will see the ships arriving (and have a better view IMHO since no buildings will be in the way).

Also, in the morning, you will be just a few feet away from the Sea Bus (about 2,50$ if I remember well) that brings you steps from the Cruise ships in Canada Place. Unless you have mobility problems or way too much luggage, you won't even need a cab.

Also, when you arrive (by cab I guess?), you could also take the sea bus instead of the longer taxi ride to the hotel (but ask the cab driver which one will be the fastests, depending on traffic on the bridge).

If I was going in Vancouver and not staying at my aunt's place, I'm pretty sure I would get a room there, very convenient because the Sea Bus brings you downtown in 15 minutes and the market place is very nice.

Also, if you have a very rainy day or something, there is a movie theatre nearby.

Last summer we stayed at the Pan Pacific Hotel and had a phenomenal view of the harbor. We could see both sides of the Canada place pier and even had a distant view of the Balantyne pier. The tradeoff for our view was we had a room with a sofabed not a regular bed which appeared to be a connecting room to turn a standard room into a suite but for one night I can deal with a sofabed. While many rooms would have a view of the harbor it would be a pure luck to get a room that faces the correct side of the pier to see your particular ship dock. I did see our ship dock but it was when I got up to look out at 5:30AM. I also saw the Celebrity Millenium sail past on its way to the other pier.

The Lonsdale Quay Hotel has a lot of merit but I have stayed there in the last 60 days and quite frankly there are better hotels in downtown Vancouver for equal or better dollars. It is also hit and miss as to the location of the rooms. Don't misunderstand me, I lived in North Vancouver for for than 50 years and loved it, the Lonsdale Quay is fun, there are a number of restaurants in the lower Lonsdale (Moodyville) area, and I also developed the 6 screen theatre mentioned in a previous post but I would still be inclined to stay downtown Vancouver if I was doing a cruise.

Thanks Ut, yes I did see the article and also the plane they stuck in the water at Gibsons. Nice win for the Canucks tonight though. Been up in Las Vegas the last few days doing Christmas shopping and investing in casinos....loosing venture but better than the equity markets.
