Hotel Recommendations in San Juan?

We are flying down a day early and will be staying a night in San Juan. I'm about to start looking for a hotel so I thought I would ask if anyone has any recommendations.

Our flight gets in at 2pm on Sat, cruise leaves at 8pm on Sunday. We aren't really interested in doing any excursions while there (we were in San Juan on a previous cruise) just more seeing the local sites, places to eat, etc...

Thanks!

We always stay at the Marriott Stellaris. You will find tons of information and suggestions on the San Juan board.

We stayed at the Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino in San Juan last year before and after our Serenade cruise. It is a beautiful hotel right on Condado beach. If you want a cheap place to eat there is a great pizza place called Danny's International about two blocks away.

Another big vote for El Convento in Old San Juan. You can always stay in a beautiful hotel on the beach somewhere, but El Convento is very unique. It used to a convent and is right across the street from the Cathedral, and up the street from the original city gate. There is lots of history in the area, many things to see, and you can walk everywhere to all the sights. You'll get the real feel of Old San Juan.

Here is the link.

I've stayed at the Sheraton Old San Juan. Conveniently located and within walking distance to shops and is directly across from one of the piers. We rolled our suitcases across the street...so easy.

Please note that not all cruiselines use Pier 4 (the pier across from the Sheraton) for their cruises from San Juan. This year in fact, only Carnival is using Pier 4. The rest are using the Pan Am Pier across the harbor from Old San Juan - about a 15 minute taxi ride away.

The Sheraton is still a good hotel, but unless you are sailing Carnival please don't book it expecting to be able to drag your bags across the street to the ship.

Yes, thanks for pointing that out. I should have noted that I was there last year, and we choose that hotel specifically for the close proximity to the pier and surrounding area.:)

How far is pier 4 from the airport? We are hoping to stay one night after the cruise but we are unsure if we should stay near the peir, airport , beach, old san juan etc. ..still need to do lots of research!!!

But in the interm does anyone know from/to pier 4 the price of a cab to/from the aiport and if there are different options maybe a bus?

Thanks!

The taxi cost from to/from the airport to/from Pier 4 will be $20.50 for up to 5 people in a cab, plus $1 per luggage.

Here is the info: http://www.puertoricodaytrips.com/getting-around-by-taxi/

If you decide to stay at a hotel elsewhere in the SJ area, here is where to find out your hotel's zone: http://www.puertoricodaytrips.com/hotel-taxi-zones/

The bus is not an option if you have luggage, they don't allow big suitcases on.

The cost of taxis are set rates. I remember it being about $25 per taxi. We were a group of 9 so needed 2 taxis.

When we disembarked, we did negotiate with the many van drivers at the pier and paid $5 pp from Pier 4 back to the airport.
