Old Lahaina Luau information please

We have made reservations at the Old Lahaina Luau in March. We made this reservation because I read so many fantastic reviews on Old Lahaina Luau of which most say it is the best in all of the islands. According to the person who took our reservation they said the port is only about 15 minutes away. I have also heard it is more like a half hour away. The Laua is over at 8:15-8:30 and our ship leaves at 11:00 pm. Since we have to get a cab back to port are we giving ourselves enough time to be back to port by about 10:00 pm.

This is the critical question: What ship and what port?

 

Kahului: Kahului is across the island and anywhere from 45 minutes to 1+ hour from Lahaina. You'll need a rental car as the best alternative, although there have been occassional reports of shuttle services (were about 40/person) from Kahului to Lahaina. A private taxi costs about $150 round-trip. The luau does not and will not send a shuttle to Kahului because of time, fuel costs, etc.

 

Lahaina: The Lahaina tender pier is less than 2 miles from the OLL. You could walk it in about 40 minutes, but we don't think it's the most scenic walk. You really shouldn't walk back at night because the road is quite dark with cars whipping by. There's a shuttle from Wharf Cinema Center, across Front St. from the tender pier, that makes a stop at Lahaina Cannery Mall, which is across Front St. from the OLL. You have to walk around the back of the mall to get to Front St. and across; no biggie. The last shuttle may leave LCM earlier than you'll be ready to return to town, but a taxi would be quite inexpensive and only 5 to 10 minutes.

 

In any case, the 15 minutes is if you're ship is tendered at Lahaina. The 30 minutes is basically a pipe dream time from Kahului to Lahaina. That would be at top speed with no other cars on the road and perfect conditions. A more realistic drive time is 45 minutes, but it's best to allow at least 15 minutes more leeway to that, plus parking time if you have a rental car.

Just be prepared to leave earlier if you have to. Like what Beachchick says, it depends where you're docked. Have fun on you're cruise and Luau!

Thanks for all the information. Our ship is Holland America Zaandam and the port is Lahaina. From what you said I am sure we will have plenty of time and will take a taxi. Sure am looking into the cruise as we have been snowed in Aloha, Oregon a Portland subburb.
