Do passengers go through immigration at the port in Bahamas?

Can anyone who has gone on a cruise to the Bahamas help me with this question: When the cruise ship reaches the Bahamas and when a passenger is leaving the ship/entering the arrival area at the port, do government officials from the Bahamas check documents? When I went to Mexico on a cruise, there were no Mexican officials checking passengers' documents (and we left the ship with only our Sail&Sign Cards issued by the Carnival cruise). Since I'm a citizen of India studying in the US, I normally need a visa to go to the Bahamas, but the people in the Bahamas embassy said I don't need a visa if immigration officials don't check passengers' documents at the port (they didn't know if they did).

The Cruiseline is responsible for giving all this information to immigration upon arrival. (you don't physically go thru immigration). If you're papers won't allow you entrance to the bahamas.. you will NOT be allowed off the ship.

If you haven't already done so, you might also confirm that your US visa will allow you back into the US once you've left. I agree with scubagirrl's answer on the Bahamas entrance.
