Are passports required?

I'm not asking for people's opinions as to whether having a passport is a good idea or not (pros/cons). I just want to know if you NEED a passport to get in/out of Belize on a cruise.

Thanks!

No. A proper birth certificate and a valid photo ID are all that's required...

Thanks so much. Do you happen to know if the same is true for Guatemala?

Also, what about young kids ... I assume all they need is their American birth certificate w/out photo id?

what ever you used for check-in on the ship. the countries don't ask for more then what the ship will ask for, in the 1st place. in belize the only person ,who asks to see your ID, will be the person at the tender dock..to verify that you belong to the ship that tender goes to.

some of the ports have a "secure" area..they may have a guard to check ship ID..they want to see your ship's cabin card and your photo ID (adults). they are there to protect the cruise docks and to keep non-cruise people out.

this is good for all the ports that ship will go to.

in fact, i don't carry my passport off the ship...don't want to worry about losing it.

You're always so helpful & seem pretty rational. I love how you just answer the question w/out lectures! And you seem to be all over these boards ... from NCL to Belize, etc. You do get around. Glad you know your stuff.

Thanks!

thanx, but i really "only" hang out where i have been or where i am researaching..only seems like i am "all" over the boards :D. hope you love the spirit and it's ports, as much as we did. missed going in '08, starting to plan to go in this year.

but really, if a passport is needed in the ports...it would be required at check-in on the cruiseship. the ship is not going to let you on without one, if it's need in any of the ports.

relax and have a great cruise...be sure to check out the family cruising boards..lots of great information on travel needs for kids of all ages.

Just back from the Valor, and although there are signs posted to have the Sail and SIgn Card as well as a picture ID - only in Cozumel did they ask for it. However DH and I got separated into different lines, and I was carrying the ID's - and they let hime through with hardly a second glance.
