Cruisin' Ron VA Posted January 26, 2009 #2 Share Posted January 26, 2009 We will be stopping at the port of Panama---has anyone done a private excursion to the canal,if so who did you use. Thanks in advance.Jim&Sue Usually I dont have an opinion either way as far as private tours but in this case I will give you some advice. I have been to Panama on cruise and land based vacations. The highway system is falling apart and travel is SLOW. The port is quite a distance from Panama city and the Canal zone. Even on ship sponsored tours it is not always easy to get back to the ship on time. If you are late getting back the ship will leave you if you are not on a ship tour. Please reconsider. KatSt Posted January 26, 2009 #3 Share Posted January 26, 2009 My family and I did the Carnival sponsored Panama Canal excursion in July 2007. The excursion was advertised as being 7 hours in length. The actual excursion was closer to 11 hours. It was a very long day. If we hadn't been on the Carnival sponsored excursion, the ship would have left without us. We waited close to an hour for a tanker to come through the Canal in the opposite direction from ours. You can't anticipate what's going to happen and how long it will take. I would play it safe and stick with Carnival for this particular excursion.
