magbol99 Posted February 3, 2009 #1 Share Posted February 3, 2009 has anyone purchased just their own snorkel and then used the mask and fins from the excursion. Is that something that is possible or easy. Considering for looking at a dry or partial dry. Also thought it might be good for the "yuck" factor. Thoughts? Latitude 20 Posted February 3, 2009 #2 Share Posted February 3, 2009 Actually, if I were only going to buy one thing, it would be a good-fitting mask. Mask fit is a very personal thing and a leaky mask can ruin a trip pretty quickly. If you want to use the rental snorkles, just bring along some disinfectant wipes and clean the mouthpiece with them. Rinse it off in the saltwater to get rid of the alcohol taste. I'd hit up the rental mask (a lot of people use saliva as a defogger) and fins (to get rid of any athletes foot fungi) with disinfectant too. Get a mask and snorkle just for you.......that is what we have done.......you never know whose face has been in the community masks.
TheVegasMan Posted February 3, 2009 #4 Share Posted February 3, 2009 I was at Sports Chalet the other day, their $60 Body Glove snorkel set (Mask, snorkel and fins) was on sale for $30 as it is the off-season. Check your local sporting goods or dive store for similar deals. They can help you find what fits. If not, a well fitting mask will stay on your face without the strap when you breathe in through your nose. If you don't want the entire set, I'd say snorkel first, then mask then fins. Wipes are always a good idea for any rented equipment you use.
