I know maybe this should be posted on another board, but I thought that it's a good topic, since it's such a big thing in NYC right now. I just saw her tonight, altough not the best view at dock, I can't wait to see her and QE2 leave Sunday. There has too be other RCCI, people on here that are inerested in this.

I hope I can see some pic of both of "the Queens" leave NYC and sail in tandem across the Atlantic. What a historical voyage!
I have been on the QE 2 twice, and may do a cruise on the QM 2 next year.

NY Waterway is advertising "Take part in this historic event with front row seats on a special NY Waterway Cruise including the spectacular fireworks display at the Statue of Liberty as the two Queens leave NY Harbor."
It's $45. pp adult and $35. pp child. My Sis-in-law sent me the info but it's a little too pricey for me. You can get more info from the NY Waterway website.

Okay, I have real pet peeve about the US. Why would they have an all blown out fire works display for the QM's leaving port? Does no one in the US ever think about the homeles...those starving, the children that are being raised in poverty. It is something that I have never been able to comprehend. Especially when the Statue of Liberty was refurished and the US spent millions of dollars to unveil her. Really...maybe if the US government/state governments spent 1/2 the money helping the homeless, the children the poverty level just might go down and children would have warm beds to sleep in...

I have rambled enough...I just don't understand all the hoopla!

Are you telling me Canada never wastes money on hoopla...
But now that you bring it up, I don't know but it would be my guess that all this hoopla is being funded by capitalist dollars trying yet to make another buck. And that my friend is whats makes this the greatest nation on the planet...

London, Canada-
Generosity, giving and caring for others starts with the individual. Have you ever done anything in our country during any of your visits here to help the poverty or feed the homeless? How about in your own country for that matter! If not, then I suggest you keep your criticisms of our country to yourself!

London,Canada:

I don't necessarily agree with how the US spends money on hoopla, but this is a historical event with a lot of spectators. With all that has gone on in NYC over the past several years, people need to have a celebration from time to time.

Also, I work in the Welfare System in NYS and I can tell you that both the State and the Federal Gov. spend millions of dollars each year trying to assist the homeless and the children who live in proverty. The bottom line is that we do help a lot of people, but there are many, many more who just don't want the help....who just don't want to change their lives. I know that it is hard to comprehend, but there are many people who are happy living a simple, minimal life. And, once decent housing is located, the individual needs to work to maintain that housing. And I don't just mean work to earn a living to maintain the housing....I mean upkeep and cleaning and repairs, etc. There are some people who just don't want to do that. There are many working individuals who ignore necessary repairs, cleaning, and upkeep that may lead to loss of their home or apartment.

Now, don't get me wrong, some people have mental health issues that go untreated and that is the reason they never come out of poverty....and I am sure that other reasons exist as well. But, the government coming in with a pot of money to assist the homeless in finding housing is not the answer to folks living in poverty. There is a lot more to it.

Working in the Welfare System for over the past 18 years I have realized that the things in life that motivate me to get up in the morning and go to work, work hard, strive for advancement and higher earnings...(such as cruises, cars, clothes, education for my children, nice home, etc), are not the things that motivate all individuals. A lot of the poverty in the US is generational poverty and the government is funding many programs to target youth and try and break the cycle.

I don't want to start a big long thread going on this topic....especially since the original question/statement was about the QM2...I just wanted to comment on your comment. No offense.

Why as a Canadain would I support the US for any of your causes. I support diffent causes in Canada, as that is my country.

I give your country alot, my money when I travel there. That my friend is called TOURISM dollars. YouR country makes alot of money from Canadians when we travel there.

In response to fireguy091 - we spend money when the Queen comes here...who cares...but we certainly don't spend millions of dollars on fireworks when something has been refurbished...we spend money on Olympics, 2010 Vancouver, British Columbia, as you do, but as we all know we get the monies back...hopefully.

I am entitled to my opinion, and feel still that the US spends needless money on all the hoopla on just about everything that happens.

Go out and spend some of your dollars on helping the needy. I DO!

Tim,
I am taking my mother on the Mother's Day weekend "Queen For a Day" cruise on the QM2. Departs NY on May 7 and cruises the waterways returning to NY on May 10. I will report back.
Have heard so many conflicting stories about her. Can't wait to form my own opinion.

I never said you didn't have a right to an opinion. It is in fact yours and it is wellcome And I will also say we Americans wellcome your tourism dollars. But I get the feeling you are saying the US is paying for all this hoopla when in fact it is interprising folks trying to generate capitalistic dollars so the cycle can continue.
I don't think the other poster intended for you to give money to our charities.
Just continue to spend your tourism dollars here and we will both be happy. As we will continue to spend ours in your beautiful country...

Thanks fireguy....I will continue to spend money in the US and glad to hear you will continue to spend your Tourism dollars in our country.

Hopefully all goes well with sending the 2Q's out to sea. We saw the QM in February anchored in the seas near St. Thomas..awesome ship, but can never port...she is too big...

Now why in the world would fireworks cost millions of dollars? They can't cost that much, can they?

On another note, anybody have any links to photos of this event?
