Hi,

Will it be possible to get a guide to take us from the port for a 2 or 3 hours tour. Then to be dropped off at the beach for us to sunbathe and swim with turtles if we wish. I dont want to book on one of the tours before I go.

Any ideas and prices would be appreciated:)

We have used Cameron Reid twice and have been very pleased with his services. He can provide a 'standard' tour for you of island highlights or you can discuss sights which you would like to see and which of those would be feasible to see within your time frame. We are just back from the Emerald Princess and Cameron's charge for a 3-4 hour tour (for the car, no matter how many people) is $135. Very reasonable. Check out his website at www.scenicbarbados.com There will be an email address there as well.

We've been three times to Barbados, booked Cameron Reid, and were absolutely delighted with him. You can email him at camireid@yahoo.com and let him know exactly what you have in mind. He'll be at the terminal when you arrive in Barbados holding a sign with your name on it, take you where you want to go in his immaculate car, and tell you all about Barbados. When you dock at Barbados, a shuttle bus will take the passengers to the terminal. It really will be best to have someone already booked; otherwise, you're taking a chance on finding someone who will please you. Cameron will offer wonderful suggestions of his own if you want him to. Barbados is wonderful--our favorite island--and we've been to most of them. You won't want to miss it.

Have a great cruise. :)

Could not agree more with GG above. We talked with another couple from the Emerald Princess who waited until they disembarked at the cruise terminal to secure a taxi for an island tour. The taxi driver then asked them to wait "a few minutes" while he tried to get another couple to share the fare. That few minutes turned into half an hour of their precious time in port. Add to that, the driver was fairly uncommunicative unless he was asked questions by his passengers. These people returned to the ship rather disappointed in their day on Barbados.

Cameron, on the other hand, provides a running commentary as he drives, and, although we had specific sights we wanted to see, he also took us to a couple of photo spots that he was certain we would appreciate (and he was correct!). He provided us with a map of Barbados, marked with our route and our stops, for us to have as a souvenir and for our reference for our future visits. Depending upon how many ships are in port, you may not have Cameron as your driver, but we've been happy with his other drivers as well.

In three tours of Barbados, we have seen many wonderful sights. I will try to list the best of the best here. All of Barbados is wonderful! We both loved St. James Parish Church. That whole area of Barbados [st. James] is beautiful. The "flower garden" [can't remember exact name] where the waves crash on high cliffs is another beautiful photo op. On the Atlantic coast, Bathsheba is beautiful, too, with rocks in the ocean and high waves. There's a very scenic church on the way there--St. John's. We loved Crane Beach Resort for lunch! It's a beautiful place that looks a lot like the Riviera. Cameron has a website--scenicbarbados.com--with lots of information, too. Barbados is just a beautiful island! It's our favorite.

Cameron made up a map as we went along last week. We went: Bridgetown>Cave Hill (overlooking Bridgetown)>Highland stop near Mount Wilson>Sugar Hill>St. John's Church>Bathsheba>Barclay's Park>Cherry Tree Hill>Speightstown>Holetown>Bridgetown.

And he's flexible if you want to change it. We were thinking of letting him end at the Holetown festival, but wasn't much going on that day. MY ONLY REGRET: He said no one can curse like a Bajan. Though he wouldn't demonstrate, he said he was once on another island, and someone paid him a nickel for each different curse work he could say. I wish I'd thought to offer the nickel a word for a demo.

Well, as has already been stated, there is a lot to see on Barbados, and what you choose to see will depend upon what your preferences are. If you want to spend all of your time outside, there is no end of nature preserves and botanical parks to visit along with beautiful beaches. If you like a bit of a mix, there are some indoor sights that are worthwhile as well. Harrison's Caves are highly recommended, and we did the caves on one visit and liked them very much. This past trip we visited Welchman Hall Gully, a nature preserve and we've been to the wildlife preserve as well. We've been to Gun Hill Signal Station, which has some history and some great views, and your driver can stop at the Lion at Gun Hill to take photos. This is a beautiful monument, which was carved out of a single piece of coral. I think that Bathsheba is a beautiful area with the rocky shore and the pounding surf. We had a wonderful lunch there at a restaurant called Round House. Check out barbados.org for some other ideas, or as was suggested, Cameron's website for some of his suggestions for tours.
