Bringing alcohol

What is the maxium amount each adult can bring through customs? I kow it says i litre per person but customs never stops you, Customs web page saya aslong as they think its for personal consuption so what is the max

According to http://www.cbp.gov. (Click on "Travel" and then on "Know Before You Go."), there is no limit, but you will need to pay duty (up to 4%) on everything more than 1 litre per person. Not sure how they calculate the duty, it all may depend on the luck of the dra with who you deal with.

5 liters is allowed if you visited the USVI.

 

All it takes is one broken bottle to make the $2 you saved per bottle go from a great savings to a PITA.

 

Also remember there is a weight limit for your suitcases on all airlines. And alcohol is not allowed as a carry on item.

I never had to pay any duties for bringing alcohol to the U.S. I brought back several bottles and it was just my husband and I, so the one per person thing is not so unless something changed over the last year and a half.

 

Consumption is always an option to avoid duties :) Just don't get sick on the plane...teehee

1 per person is the law but not enforced, We got off the ship (wife and I) with 6 bottles and nothing said . Just wondering if anyone has been questioned or had to pay duty
