Best way to get to Trunk Bay?

Is it better to take a shore excursion from the ship to Trunk Bay or to do it yourself? If it's best to go on your own, could someone tell me the steps to take on how to get there? Thanks!

A number of people go to St. John's on their own. We did. There are two ways (that I know of) to get to St. John's on your own. Local bus or taxi. We took the local bus. The local bus costs $2pp each way. The cab could run you $30 plus tip each way.

We docked at Crown Bay not CA. This is what I posted on another thread (there are a number of threads here all about taking the local safari bus):

There are a number of posts in this thread about locating the bus. I have read that the bus in CA is near the K-Mart. We took the bus from Crown Bay.

Here are the directions I posted on another thread:

Once you get off the ship (Crown Bay), follow the pier and walkway past the port shops. Go through the gate and turn left toward the road. Once at the road, turn right and walk about 1 ½ city blocks to a Y. At the Y go to your left, up the hill to the main road. There will be a KFC at the top of the hill on your right and a small strip mall on your left.

Once on the main road, look to your left and you will see a bus stop shelter (made of cement). Stand directly across the street from this bus shelter and you will be able to pick up the bus going east here. Ask the driver if they are going to Red Hook. Jump on the bus – everyone says, “good morning” when they get on the bus – and enjoy the ride. There are door bell like buttons to push when you want to get off. The trip should cost $2 pp. You pay the driver when you get off.

To go back to Crown Bay – pick the bus up right where you got off and you will do the loop. Make sure to leave some extra time to get back to Crown Bay as afternoon traffic in town is tough.

As for it stopping a lot. It does stop a lot, but it goes faster than I thought it would. It is not like a bus in the States. The passenger area is open and people just hop on and off.

The local safari bus will not be directly at the port (there are safari buses at the port that charge a lot for tourists

Once on St. John's there are shuttle buses that will take you to Trunk Bay etc...

Have fun.

Hey Don Mar, you mentioned that there are "shuttle busses" on St. John's. Are they really "shuttle busses"? or are they the taxi type transportation that some people were talking about that charged $6.00 pp/ each way??

Everythings seems quite economical except the transportation on St. John's that takes you from Red Hook to Trunk Bay. Just wondering if there was anything alternative that could be taken.

Thanks in advance!!!

PS ALSO wondering if you can buy a round trip ticket for the ferry from RedHook to St. Johns (thus saving $$) OR if you were limited to paying $6.10 each way???

The shuttles are like taxis for many people. I am not sure how much they cost as we hiked a trail - right near the ferry dock - to a fabulous beach. No transportation needed.

You need to but your ferry tickets before you get on. You can not buy round trip - at least they would not let us (one timers). There are commuter books to purchase. They begin selling ticket 15 minutes before departure and not before.

1.) FYI, it's St. John.

2.) Nope, ferry is the only way to get across, basically. However, it does not go to Trunk Bay, it lets you off in the main town, Cruz Bay. How much cheaper could you possibly get? Aren't they still well under $10, each way?

3.) Large open air taxis abound in St. John. You will not have trouble finding them---walk off the end of the ferry pier, they're right there. Walk out of Trunk Bay's entrance, they're right there. It's a no-brainer, you don't have to worry about transportation once on the island, thank goodness.

Check all the other threads on how to get from St. Thomas to St. John. Many people tweak the process a little, and there will be a lot of info there for you, there are hundreds of threads already on exactly this topic. Search "ferry St. John", for example, that brings up many of them. Search is your friend.

  • 2 weeks later...

What Don refered to as "shuttle busses" on St. John are Taxis. A taxi from Cruz Bay to Trunk Bay is $6 pp, ow.

Getting to St. John from St. Thomas requires that you take the ferry, private water taxi, a day charter or rent a boat. The ferry is the cheapest at $6.10 pp, ow.

You can usually buy round trip tickets for the Red Hook ferry to St. John, but its still $6.10 each way... so round trip is $12.20.
