Has anyone been to Astoria on a cruise? Would like some info on what there is to do there. We will be there in May and really did not want to take one of the ships tours. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We stopped there on our repositioning cruise in 2007. It's a cute town. The town set up a little tourist market right outside the ship, with crafts and visitor info. There is a little trolly that runs up and down the water front, but it was very crowded. They also had shuttles for a minimal price that took you down to the Maritime museum, and other stops, can't remember everything, but the museum is definately worth doing.

And also there is the Astoria Column.

If you can rent a car or take an excursion to Fort Clatsop, it is well worth the time. It is just west of Astoria. There is also Cape Disappointment State Park just across the Columbia in Washington that has a great Lewis and Clark museum. http://www.nps.gov/lewi/

Fort Hammond State Park on the coast is well worth seeing as well. Hertz will pick you up from the pier and you can rent a car for a day for about $50.00. It is an amazingly beautiful place.

Been there twice now on a couple coastal cruises - Astoria is a really nice town.

If you want to go downtown, there's a trolley that stops near the cruise ship terminal and goes along the waterfront.

The shuttle was a fantastic deal. I can't remember the exact cost (which means it was probably $10 or something like that!) - we just walked off the ship and caught it. That price also included a bus up to the Astoria Column, which was a huge savings over what the ship wants for a shorex up there, plus we were able to stay as long as we wanted.

We've also done an excursion to Seaside and Cannon Beach that was very worthwhile - lots of good scenery along the way, and both towns are equally nice.
