UncleFester Posted March 18, 2009 #1 Share Posted March 18, 2009 We are going on the Jan 2, 2010 NCL Star Panama Canal cruise with a stop in Puntarenas. We are in port from 8 - 5 and would like to see this volcano but do not see any ship tours. Is there enough time to do a private tour and can anyone that has done it recommend anyone? Thanks to all in advance for your help
MonocacyCruiser Posted July 21, 2009 #2 Share Posted July 21, 2009 I found this post while looking for my own tour ideas. We used Angel Cross as a guide twice before and will hire him again for our November cruise. He is fluent in English and Spanish, he's Costa Rican but lived in the US for years. Richard in Panama Posted July 21, 2009 #3 Share Posted July 21, 2009 Just be aware that because of the altitude of the volcano this trip often ends up being a long ride up into the clouds where you really can't see anything, or very little. I've done it a few times . . . I have yet to see the picture perfect day you'd like to imagine. Not to discourage you, but something to keep in mind. If it turns out to be that way, and you won't find that a disappointment . . . go, but if you expect the postcard view . . . Allis154 Posted July 22, 2009 #4 Share Posted July 22, 2009 When we were in Arenal VNP in 2006, this was a picture we took. Our guide told us this was the best(clearest) that he had seen in months. Very rare. You can see a little eruption on the left, rolling down the side of the volcano.
mcmarya Posted July 26, 2009 #5 Share Posted July 26, 2009 We were in Costa Rica for a week and only saw the Arenal Volcano on one day. Usually the top or more was in the clouds. It's pretty iffy to actually see it.

Jeff in Torrance Posted July 26, 2009 #7 Share Posted July 26, 2009 We did an excursion to Arenal from a Celebrity cruise, which was wonderful. The bus ride was about 2-1/2 hours each way, to a very nice resort where we swam in thermal pools for an hour, followed by a very nice buffet lunch. We never saw the actual volcano, however.
