hdawson Posted April 29, 2004 #5 Share Posted April 29, 2004 Dan, before designing your deck plans and the name for the ship, put together $25,000,000 for a pretty old idle ship. Then another 10 to 15,000,000 to bring her up to the forthcoming SOLAS upgrades. Many more important issues than naming the ship.

redneck_dan Posted April 30, 2004 Author #8 Share Posted April 30, 2004 To get some venture capital, I might have to call my ship Vegas of the Seas.com and put internet access in every room. I would also sell tickets exclusively on an internet site. Internet companies can get venture capital of about 100x sales. If I can sell $2,000,000 a year in tickets, then I can get the $200,000,000 I need for a boat. Also, I need a great itinerary. I was thinking of Hawaii only 10/11 day cruises: 2 nights on Oahu 1 sea night (got to get in the casino time) 2 nights on the Big Island 1 night on Kauai (2 nights on 11 day cruises) 1 night at sea 1 night Molokai 2 nights on Maui That means I will need to contract with an American shipbuilder to build the boat. hdawson Posted April 30, 2004 #10 Share Posted April 30, 2004 Oh. So you're going to build a new ship. Then it will cost 350 million and up and up. US shipyard? 450 million and up and up. And no casino in Hawaiian waters. US workers? Well, I can't imagine the cost of workers in salary and benefits.
redneck_dan Posted April 30, 2004 Author #11 Share Posted April 30, 2004 hdawson, it's going to be an internet company. It will not need to make a profit. I would assume that I could open a casino in international waters. I am not 100% sure though. $200,000,000 should be able to get me a boat with about 400 rooms. 2 people per room is 800. 30 sailings a year means 24,000 people. I will only need to charge $83 per person to get the $2,000,000 a year in revenue I need to start the company. I can double the cruise prices each year for the first 5 years. I can tell the venture capitalist that I can grow this company from $2,000,000 in revenue to $32,000,000 in only 5 short years. Get every hooked at the cheap rates and they will pay the $1,328 in year five. Of course, I will sell my cruise line after year five. hdawson Posted April 30, 2004 #12 Share Posted April 30, 2004 Pls let Carnival and Royal Caribbean that it's possible to double fares ea yr. With the size of their fleets, they have enormous buying power. Don't forget that Rennasance Cruises tried to operate with no travel agent participation, no children allowed and no smoking onboard. Of course they are now a foot note in history.
redneck_dan Posted April 30, 2004 Author #13 Share Posted April 30, 2004 Renaissance (adult only) and American Hawaii Cruises (Hawaii only) were both victims of 9-11 and poor capitalization. They couldn’t survive that horrible six months of cancellations after 9-11. Actually, the idea of an adult only line that doesn’t use travel agents is pretty stupid. My guess is the majority of the people who would like adult only cruises would be empty nesters. Empty nesters typically would go through a travel agent to book a cruise. The people who would be more likely to avoid the travel agents and have the money to cruise would be Generation X. Most of Generation X folks have children now. hdawson Posted April 30, 2004 #15 Share Posted April 30, 2004 Dan, Renn was in trouble before 9-11. I believe I remember ads for 5 day European cruises for $699 including air from the US and two nites of hotel in Europe and this was for a long period. They could not book groups because of their no children and non-smoking policies. Couldn't even book relatively small family groups. Well over 90% of cruises are booked through travel agents. Cut them out and you are in deep doodoo as Renn realized in their last days when they tried so hard to get the agents back onboard. Many people are just not comfortable investing thousands of dollars with an impersonal website with little or no personal service or contact. Now, having said all that, I admit that I didn't think the video rental business would be a profitable business and didn't think UPS could compete with the US Postal Service. Soooooo I have been wrong before.
