John&John Posted March 26, 2009 #1 Share Posted March 26, 2009 We would really like to go to the piano bars on our cruise, but they have all been smoking lounges on our recent cruises. If I wasn't an ex-smoker it probably wouldn't be so bad! Are all the piano bars smoking fleet wide? Anyone think that some lounges (like the piano bar) should alternate evenings of smoking and non-smoking?

Every piano bar on every ship I've been on has been smoking, and on the Fantasy class ships can get really bad because the room is so small. If the piano player asks for no smoking at the piano, then sitting up at the bar around the piano isn't so bad sometimes.

Reminds me of the days where smoking was right next to nonsmoking in restaurants (no longer here in GA). Just sitting on the "other side" doesn't always help for those allergic or against it IMHO. This is a battle that can't be fought, lounges will be smoking as long as there are smokers. Sol y Mar

Sol y Mar There appear to be a few non smoking lounges available on the ships. The bar/lounge where the karaoke was on our last two cruises was non-smoking. Believe it or not  Winston's Cigar Bar was non-smoking when we were on the Valor. :D
kelz66 Posted March 26, 2009 #5 Share Posted March 26, 2009 all lounges are non smoking with the exception of the sports bar, cigar bar and the piano bar. this leave the disco, wine bar, lobby bar, karaoke, and the band lounges along with the main show room.

crusnbee Posted March 26, 2009 #9 Share Posted March 26, 2009 Our last cruise was on Princess and they actually made the casino non smoking for 3 of 10 nights. That was great! Unfortunately, I managed to find my way in every other night too! ;) CJ

I always saw people leaving the disco to go smoke...wow. I can't speak for the Destiny or Holiday, didn't make it to either of their discos. Didn't make it to the one on the Splendor either, I must be getting old :(, but do recall reading in the Capers that it was smoking.

Anyone think that some lounges (like the piano bar) should alternate evenings of smoking and non-smoking? All the piano bars I've been in have permitted smoking. Some had smoking sections, some didn't. There are plenty of lounges onboard where smoking is not permitted...no need to mess with the piano bar or any other smoking venue. No, there is no need for smoking/nonsmoking alternating......

They have a non-smoking area (think it was right at the piano bar) but seeing as how people can still smoke in the area it's not much consolation. Now before smokers claim the right to do so..... I have asthma so it's tough to be around smoke in general. I think I spent to much time in smokey bars when I was young! That said, I kept my inhaler on me and had a blast with BOB on the Victory last year and left when I just couldn't take it anymore, well before I needed my inhaler a 2nd time. I doubt I will see the piano bar on our next cruise, I don't need to push my luck.
Azure Moon Posted March 27, 2009 #14 Share Posted March 27, 2009 Anyone think that some lounges (like the piano bar) should alternate evenings of smoking and non-smoking? Yes, I think it would be nice to have at least one night where smoking isn't permitted. Or have the first half hour to hour be non-smoking then the rest of the night smoking. Or have the piano entertainer play part of the evening in the smoking room and part of the evening in a non-smoking area of the ship. Or have two piano entertainers - and have them alternate playing in the smoking venue and non smoking venue. Heck, have dueling pianos in the theater the last night. And have the smoking group (one color) belt out songs against the the non-smoking group (another color). Believe it or not, some people who don't smoke like to listen to music, gamble, etc. too :D. The only time a disco or band bar is nonsmoking is during an event such as a multiple group get together.....
PacNwester Posted March 28, 2009 #16 Share Posted March 28, 2009 Looks like I'm going to have to cancel our cruise plans. I wish someone would have warned me about the Elation's smoking policies. I understand that it's my choice to sail on a ship. When I made the reservations, they were real quick to take my money, just hope I can get some of it back. Just like a hotel....All you have to do when booking is ask the smoking policies. It's really not the TA's, PVP's or a websites job to tell you. A little research or a simple question goes a long way.....;)
PacNwester Posted March 28, 2009 #18 Share Posted March 28, 2009 I know. I should have asked. Does anyone know if there is a bar or lounge that is non-smoking? We planned this trip for our two daughters' birthday(born same date, four years apart) and one has asthma. They've been looking forward to live music and dancing. Can anyone give me some information, please? How about the restaurant on the Lido deck?

And, for sure, the main show lounge will be nonsmoking.

Usually outside on the Lido deck (Starboard = Right) is smoking. You can get away from it, you aren't forced to be around it. Sometimes DH forgets that the starboard side Lido is smoking and he steers me through it. A couple of tugs on his hand and we are walking on the other side of the ship in fresh(er) air. Smoking is allowed on the starboard side of the Lido pool deck but not on the port side. If they are under 18 they do a thing in the diso earlier in the evening with music. Once the bar goes to 18 and over it is smoking. Also the bar where the band is is smoking.

Some ships are better than others. On some they have very good ventilation systems  and others don't :(. Sometimes you can luck out and still enjoy the music without going in a room with smoking. For instance, when we were on the Legend, there was a sitting area outside of the Piano Bar. Hubby and I sat there for a little bit and listened to the music. Sol y Mar, you made me chuckle, because hubby and I do the same thing :D. On some ships I've found one entrance into the casino is sometimes worse than another. Yep, hubby ends up heading for that side every time .
