Tennis shoes on Formal Night?

Actually, my bad. I meant non sneaker, not necessarily dress shoe. I've yet to find a dress shoe that I haven't had to break in . Casual shoes/loafers, etc. were more what I had in mind.

And if I had feet problems, you'd find me in slippers (but do have a preference to bare feet :D!)

I highly recommend LL Bean moccasin-slippers. Very stylish AND comfy-womfy too!!

Just my 2 cents. Going to the Carnival websites for answers is smart. BUT... what they have in writing and what the actual practice is on the ship are often two different things. I saw people in flip flops in the dining room on Cruise Elegant night. I saw a man in jeans and flip flops in David's Supper Club on the Pride earlier this month. Carnival is quite lax in enforcing their rules at times. Children aren't supposed to be unattended and they're not supposed to be in the hot tubs. Anyone who's cruised knows that's not enforced. So while I would go to the Carnival website for answers, I'd also talk to people who've actually been on cruises, too.

I guess just getting an answer to the questions was to much to ask. I did not go into details about my son because I did not feel it was necessary. Some folks on this board should consider that there may be other circumstances that surround the question. For example, my son is autistic and any binding/tight clothing items make him extremely comfortable. Alot of autistic individuals have this issue. Yes, I sometimes do make him dress up anyway but do not feel I need to force this one him during vacation.

Thanks for the answers to my question but maybe some of you should stick to answering the question asked and not judging someone. If you see someone at dinner dressed like my son - just remember that there may be a reason for it!

I am new to this board and do not know if this environment is one I am going to enjoy.

IMHO, It's your vacation, go with what works for you and your family. A vacation is meant to be a memorable special experience. For some people that means wearing a button down or polo and nice slacks and feeling comfortable on elegant night. For some people that means full length gowns and tuxedos and feeling glamorous on elegant night.

Nunn Bush has some shoes that you should try. I have a pair of their patent leather dress shoes that are ultra comfortable and very lightweight.

Thanks. Will definitely take a look at them. I did find some very comfortable Clarks' but they aren't what I call "dress shoes".

Rockport also makes some "dress" shoes that are really just tennis shoes other than appearance.

There are others out there as well.

I think a teen/tween in khakis/polo/nice sneakers is fine for most occasions.

At a recent wedding, some teen wore a suit with tennis shoes. He should have seen the behind the back looks, and the clandestine comments.

And he looked stupid. Don't know if that was the look or impression he was looking for. If it was, he certainly attained it.

A good friend of mine (and not a kid, in fact he's an LAPD officer) wore

slip on checkered Vans sneakers at his wedding with his tux, as did all of his ushers, best man and so forth.

I think age and personal style has a lot to do with this issue and how you feel about it. These days some girls wear Converse high-tops to their proms under their gowns-so what.

And my grandson wore 'high top sneakers' with his suit at his grandmothers' funeral, as he forgot to bring his 'nice' shoes...!

Absolutely no one told him he could NOT be a paul-bearer...:o

Is this scenario really that much different???:)

There are some people who really have to understand that life isn't always what they 'think it should be'!:p

Have a wonderful cruise...!! I'd be more than happy to have you and your family sit at our table on 'Elegant Night'..:D

Does it really matter? It is a vacation after all. Just go and have a good time. Trust me they are not going to say, you don't have a tie, you can't have dinner tonight. People dress as different ways on formal night. Whatever you are most comfortable in. The only people I noticed on my last cruise were the ones wearing tuxes. Only because they were so few, they really stood out. Other than that I couldn't tell you what everyone else was wearing and to be honest, I really didn't care.

At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter. Everybody has their own circumstances, and it's not up to me to judge. The OP's son has a special need, so he should wear the tennis shoes. I guess I don't understand why people come on message boards seeking approval when they're going to do what they want to do/need to do any way? If the OP's son needs to wear tennis shoes due to the way he reacts to clothing due to autism, the OP should allow the son to wear the shoes. She's going to do it regardless of what we way (and that's how it should be IMO). OP, I hope you and your family have a great cruise!

I have been on many cruises and your son will not be turned away in sneeks. I just don't get this mandatory elegant night on cruises. While others may disagree , I am fine with that. I think they should have a dining room that you can dress formal and one that you can go in shorts and such , and for those that will commoent I am not talking about the buffet.

I personally go to dinner most nights in flip flops and I don'y care who likes it , i am comfrotable and on vacation too . I do wear slacks and a nice button down shirt , But I live in Florida where we go to meetings in shorts and flip flops if we want ( job Dependant )

Sorry I got alittle off topic.

There are seahorses and nautical themes abound.. and the seahorses bite!

There are zany decorations and Farcus inspired themes and grapes on the ceiling.. .. Conga lines in the dinning rooms.. Waiters dancing on their stations...Crazy colored sofas and carpets! Belly Flop Contests, Scavenger Hunts through the casinos etc etc

All the crazy things the cheerleaders defend as the uniqueness of Carnival...

So a kid wants/needs to wear tennis sneakers on Elegant Night?

Your response should be.. its the FUNSHIP go for i!

Good Grief!

The OP wasn't seeking anyone's approval. She simply asked "IF" her son can wear them, not whether or not he should. Everyone else helped out with that part of the equation.

Can my 14 year old son wear tennis shoes (sneakers) on formal night with his slacks and polo shirt if needed? Thanks!

I realize that this is a technicality but there aren't any formal nights anymore. They call them Cruise Elegant evenings.

I don't see any problem with your son wearing sneakers on the Cruise Elegant evenings. I would recommend that you get him a pair of khakis in a light color (assuming the sneakers are white) so he doesn't stand out.

No need to spend a lot of money on dress shoes that he'll outgrow quickly.

Last cruise I wore black walking Reboks (they're sneakers) and I don't think anyone noticed. It worked out great because I brought 1 pair of shoes (sneakers) and flip flops.

There are no rules against wearing tennis shoes in the dining room on either casual or elegant nights. So for that reason alone your child will be fine wearing them on elegant night.

Sneakers = a happy teen = a happy mom = a happy dad

Don't really care what other people think. If it isn't against the rules who cares what anyone else thinks. How boring a person can you be to care what shoes a kid wears, or an adult wears. What, like you don't have anything else to do but OMG that kid's got tennis shoes on, I don't think I can swallow my food now! Please, some people really need to get a life!

And even after the poster explains her child's problem, there are still posters that think he should find dress shoes that are comfortable.

How unfeeling can you be? Geez!
