Whheelchair use in Gib?

Recommended Posts

Is it possible to see the apes with someone in a wheelchair? If so, is it better to take a taxi or go on the cable car?

If this is not possible, what are the alternatives. We have 6 hrs in Gib.

Yes you can see the apes in Gib. The road goes up the hill and a taxi can take you.

We did the cable car but didnt have a wheelchair so dont know if you could get one on or not.

We also went to see some big WW guns that was quite interesting as well as the museum in the main town. If all else fails Gib is duty free and has wonderful shopping.

Hi, with or without a wheelchair, a taxi/minibus is way better than the cable car - but more especially with one. Can't remember prices, but not desperate, full (shared) taxi/minibus perhaps 25%-33% more expensive pp than cablecar but well well worth it.

You'll need a taxi from the port to the cablecar - the cablecar usually has long queues to go up, mebbe 30 to 45 min wait. There's a midway station which involves a five minute walk to the apes. Then a top station with a rather scruffy cafe & great views. Then back down same-way, probably taxis available at the bottom as its a 10 to 15 minute walk back to the top of Main St.

You can get a taxi or minibus from the quayside to take you on a circular tour up the Rock. They usually give you about 1/2 hr at St Michael's Cave (can't remember, but don't think it's wheelchair-friendly), then mebbe 20 mins at the apes - varies, cos it gets a little clogged with taxis/minibuses, but your time in the jam is with the apes so not wasted. If any of your party feels intimidated by the apes (some do), your vehicle is a useful bolt-hole & no problem if the apes climb all over it. Then on to the Great Seige Tunnel & Galleries at the spanish end - amazing views down onto the airport & border. About 20-30 mins here, as I recall the ground is uneven but OK for a wheelchair. Then back down to the town at the bottom of Main St.

Taxi/minibus can take you back to the ship, but most elect to finish the tour at the bottom of Main St & check out the town.

Here its very flat, very compact, good wheelchair territory - a big open square surrounded by cafes, restaurants, pubs, some shops, used to be a parade ground, just off the bottom of Main St (more space to breathe than Main St, ideal for a break) Then one busy long Main St packed with shops, pubs, cafes, Governors House, Trafalgar cemetary etc at the top end.

Beware of cheap duty-free electrical goods, Gib is a dumping-ground for last-year's models - could be good value but haggle like hell! Duty-free booze/smokes are the cheapest you'll find on your cruise, but low customs allowances to take home. Currency is Gib£, same value as UK£, most accept euros & dollars. Avoid change in Gib£ - not legal tender elsewhere.

Six hours isn't generous, but enough for that suggested itinerary.

Have a great cruise, John Bull
