Train to Civitavecchia

Recommended Posts

Five of us are sailing on the Celebrity Solstice June 15. However we will be in Rome for 2 days prior to sailing. We thought that we would take a train from the main train station in Rome, Roma Termini, on the 15th to the port. Has anyone done this? Should we make reservations for the train? How close is the port to the station? How long is the train ride? Might you know the approximate cost? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kay-

My DW and I are sailing out of Civitivecchia on June the 10th and we have researched this extensively. You can go to http://trenitalia.com/ which is the Italian train system home page. At the very top of the page, in the middle is an option to change the language to english. You can look at all the options and timetables and such. You can also go to http://www.raileurope.com/trenitalia and look at the best times to travel on which trains and the best way to get from termini to the port. Hope this helps, good luck!

PS. You will get alot of "Don't mess with the trains, just hire a limo!" on these boards but sometimes going by train is more interesting!

We took the train... even if you buy the tickets ahead of time because it's a regional. Tickets don't have reserved seating (unless you are booking an IC, but that will cost more.) You can just buy the tickets when you get to the station. You want Civitavecchia... the regular train station (because the screen has more options).

It's €4.50 for second class and €7 for first class and takes just over an hour. You should be at the station at least 15 minutes ahead of time because you have to walk all the way to the back, the track for these regional trains are in the far corner.

Forgot to mention the distance... Here is the map from Google. http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=trenitalia&sll=42.091853,11.793094&sspn=0.005135,0.00854&ie=UTF8&ll=42.090333,11.793652&spn=0.005135,0.00854&t=h&z=17

The train station is marked as A. It's less than 500m to the gate of the port. About 10 minutes or so.

. . . the train we took from Rome arrived at the center platform in Civitivecchia. As there are no elevators or escalators, we had to carry our luggage down one flight of stairs, walk through the tunnel under the tracks, and then back up a flight of stairs to reach the exit. If you are prepared to manage your luggage up and down flights of stairs, the train is a fine choice. Sometimes you're lucky and the train stops on the first platform so no mule work is involved.

The train depot is about .5 mile from the port and there may even be shuttle service from the entrance of the port to the ship (as most of the walking portion is usually within the port itself). A guide to walking from the port to the Civitavecchia train station can be found at: http://www.europeportreviews.com/Rome2.htm.

You can also pre-purchase tickets ahead of time online through one of the mainstay travel websites. Make sure you self-validate your ticket with your departure point once onboard the train in case they ask to check your ticket while enroute. Ours were never checked coming or going on our last trip.

The train ride between Rome and Civitivecchia is lovely. It will take anywhere from 45 to 70 minutes depending on whether it's an express or local train. If you are of able-body, it should be both doable and enjoyable.

If you take a regional train you have a good chance that it will arrive on the side track and then there will be no down and up. All the express trains use the center platform and they also have the narrow end doors with steps. The regional have double doors and one step down to the platform. Since you will be leaving in the morning to

Civitavecchia the train will most likely be empty as it is a commuter train. If you go down to the concouse level in Termini you will see a moving sidewalk that covers most of the long walk to the train. I saw it after walking. When we got to Civita we took a cab for 5 euros each to the ship (about 10 minutes). We also left our bags near the door on the train entrance platform and were able to watch from the seat. We took a train around 10am and were having lunch on the ship at noon.

Your questions have been adequately answered. Just want to add a note.

Since you are going to be in Rome in advance of your travel date, stop at Termini and pick up your tickets a day in advance, only to save time when you have luggage with you. Also, read the link below on trains.

My family (me, my mom, brother, sister-in-law and nephew-at the time was 9 months) took the train from Termini to Civita about 2 years or so ago. It was SO easy. As you can imagine, we had a lot of luggage, kid stuff, etc. We didn't buy tickets prior but you could. We stood in line for tickets about 10 minutes and had plenty of time to get some snacks prior to leaving. We had a nice ride through the Italian countryside. I can't remember how much but it was surprisingly inexpensive. I think if we had taken a taxi, it was going to be 150 euros +tip but we spent around 30 for the 5 of us. From the Civita station, it was a 5 minute walk (take a right out of the station) to the shuttle bus. There was a taxi or two waiting if you didn't want to make the walk to the shuttle. There were about 30 or so other cruisers on our train so it was nice to chat and/or get info from them as many had done the train ride prior so we basically just followed them. Good luck. It was a very modern train with comfy seats.

BTW- the only issue you might have is getting the lugguage up the few stairs on the train itself but everyone is so helpful and since the train is originating at Termini, it's not like you have to hurry up get on for fear of it pulling away, etc.
