Inside Passage Question

I see some cruises list Inside Passage explicitly and some do not. However, almost all the itineraries that I reviewed seemed to pass through what I understand to be "Inside Passage". Can someone please explain what it means when the itinerary lists "Inside Passage".

A true Inside Passage route begins in Vancouver and sails between Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands and the mainland. The ships obviously sail in sheltered water that are quite calm and they are seldom out of sight of land and scenery. There are itieneraries that are marketed out of Seattle as "Inside Passage" but these ships sail up the west side of Vancouver Is. in the Pacific which can re rough and there is no scenery for more than a day in either direction as the ships do not enter the Inside Passage until they reach Queen Charlotte Sound which is north of Vancouver Is.

Gotcha thanks. How does Carnival Spirit's 7 Day "Glacier Bay RT from Vancouver BC" sound? It cruises Inside Passage twice, cruises Glacier bay and visits Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan.

We are taking the Spirit from Whittier to Vancouver July 1 of this year, but it is south bound... NOT round trip.

Mike- Your name is pretty common but did you live in Orange County years ago? Your avatar sort of resembles someone we knew with your name but it's hard to tell in the small thumbnail!

 

Anyway, all cruises to/from Vancouver pass through the Inside Passage on the east side of Vancouver Islands. Between Glacier Bay and Vancouver (over 1000 miles) the ship will be in sheltered waters and not in open ocean unless they stop in Sitka instead of Juneau.

You CAN get a cruise that goes to Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway (or Haines), Sitka and Seward.

Sitka is a really special place...............Russian History and beautiful sights.

We're doing this one b-2-b this year.:)

Well even an inside passage route is exposed to open waters when the ship passes through Queen Charlotte Sound and Dixon Entrance but we are speaking of a few hours not days.
