Swine flu updates from Cruise Critic

Recommended Posts

A little (true) swine flu humor to lighten the mood...

While I was at the hospital ER being tested for swine flu today (which I do NOT have), the nurse told me about a case they had yesterday. The mother brought her child in with cold symptoms. She was frantic with worry and was positive that her child had swine flu. Why? Because the boy who sits next to her in class returned to school MONDAY of this week after a trip to Mexico. The mother also stated that her child had started having symptoms and running fever SUNDAY. Hellooooo??? LOL! :D

I guess the hospitals and clinics are being flooded with "possible cases of swine flu". I hated to go, but I did return from a cruise last week, and I am running fever. I felt it was better to go take the flu test than to wonder if I had it and worry that I might be exposing others to it.

I am saying quoting the old adage, EXCREMENT rolls down hill. We are getting upset before we ever step foot onboard for what we planned on being a enjoyable time. I know I had lots of plans for Cozumel as I am not a fan of Jamica or such. Then I also dont enjoy what I perceive to be an attitude of "We will do whatever we need to do & tell you when we get around to it" well my $$$ are paying for this vacation & hence their salaries. I know that the staff is underpaid & overworked, but unfortunately I cant go in & accost in any shape, fashion or form the CEO & others who is causing these problems. The only outlet I have is unfortunately the Stewards & such.

And YES I have worked for many years in the Airline industry including as a LEAD AGENT both before, during & after 9/11 so I understand these types of problems a lot better than some. The ONE thing we all learned was any information was better than NONE or the same bs regurgitated. And unfortunately it was the people on the FRONT LINES who suffered the most from the travellers. This is the way it is in most service industries. You get a lousy steak undercooked or overcooked at a restaurant, no matter what the waitstaff does, you are going to lower your tip if not cancel it completly. If you dont, that is your choice. But I believe TIPS are for SERVICE above & beyond the norm. And that it is based on the WHOLE EXPERIENCE. If Carnival Corp decides to underpay its staff & gets away with it, that is their business. I am not their conscience. I am paying for a VACATION & the service that comes with it.

Perhaps you should tell your waiters and cabin stewards as soon as you board, why you are removing their gratuities.

This is my first post but I have stalked the boards for a long time and this thread for the past 2 days.

I just talked to Carnival and they said the Inspiration is now going to stay in Grand Cayman for 2 days instead of the 1. I asked for the timing and he said he wasn't sure how late or what they would do because of the casinos. Anyone with any advice on that? I hope it is an 11pm type thing! I am happy with the change.

He also said he wasn't sure of the exact dates either because that is the only info he had, but he said all the new info might be up later tonight on the website.

Hope this helps!

It was reported on our roll call that a PVP told the poster that our cruise would not be updated until tomorrow or Friday. Hurry up an wait. I personally don't care where we go and the service staff on my cruise will not be stiffed like some fools here are advicating.

WHOA! Go back and read my prior post, begging that poster not to withdraw the gratuities! The post you reference was not in favor of what they're doing. It was because I think the people who are being cheated out of their gratuities should have fair warning of it. That way, they can give appropriate service to this person.

And you are what I would call a SHEEPEOPLE. Just do what everyone else tells you to do. I dont follow anyone & only do what I agree with. I have worked very hard for many years to own my own business because I am not a mindless follower.

And we could debate endlessly about tipping & such. Unfortunately this just points out a major problem when a Corporation tries to shove off some of their costs to us in a indirect way. I REFUSE to be FORCED to go along with this. I will tip what I feel is proper for the service I receive. If Carnival chooses to underpay their staff & try to force these costs onto Passengers thru tips is their business. What I choose to tip is MY BUSINESS. Pretty simple economics.

And as far as giving cruising a bad name, Carnival is giving themselves a pretty good blackeye right now.

Better late than never? ;) I was just as angry as all of you, trust me...

Off I go to update our chart! (p.s. we've just added Princess and Holland America details, if you are interested in seeing what the other lines are doing: http://www.cruisecritic.com/news/news.cfm?ID=3199)

Although my cruise isn't until May 31st...my entire itinerary is in Mexico and the only option we've heard so far is for the Splendor to go to the Pacific NW.

I wish they would give more info now so that we could make other plans. I just called my airline and it will indeed be $150/person to switch to a new flight plus any extra cost of the fare. The longer we wait the more it will cost for a different flight. And right now it's at least an extra $1,000 to switch to a caribbean cruise-if Carnival even allowed it.

Carnival please don't say safety is your # 1 concern if you are willing to avoid ports with 0 cases to instead visit ports with CONFIRMED cases.

I am SO bitter and apologize in advance for my ranting. I worked my behind off in nursing school for the last several years and this was my light at the end of the tunnel. It's starting to get dark :(

We are cruising the Splendor on the 31st as well. Let's hope things calm down by then. If the itinerary stays the same and we decide to go anyways, I am sure we can have a good time. If you all decide to go as well, just look for the three couples drinking like there is no tomorrow and having the time of their lives.

It looks like the people booked on future Esctasy cruises are really being affected. Now I ask this. If you were booked on a 5 day cruise that has now been converted to a 7 day, do you get 2 extra days FREE or are they going to come & ask for more $$$$ or what.

Definetly could get UGLY.

Just found this thread looking for some answers myself. At first I was frustrated with Carnival for not making good on their promise of updates today. Listening to everyone else reminds me my problems are not that big. I have been looking forward the this cruise (Splendor 5/17) since January when we made the res. Going with my wife, daughter and son-in-law. Our 30th and their 1st anniversary. I really don't care where we go. With 35,000 plus deaths in the US annually from flu related illnesses, I'm not that concerned about the Swine flu. Don't get me wrong, if there were considerable case in the ports of call I wouldn't want to go. My attitude is I'm making memories with my family. As long as I can spend time with them, I'm happy. Don't want to complain about what is and wishing for what could have been. This is not Carnivals fault. It's just bad luck and bad timing. As for me, I'm going to have a greaaaat time. I'm determined NOT to be a complaining old fart.

Don't miss the fine print:

"If you are currently booked on one of the above cruises and elect not to sail on the revised itinerary, you can request a future cruise credit to use on a sailing departing prior to December 31, 2010 at a later date. Call 1-888-CARNIVAL for more information."

Wow. Do you still work in the airline industry? Next time my flight is delayed and they can't tell me at that moment for how long, what % of your salary do you think is fair for me to get?
